Systems Engineer

Location: UK Mobile Worker with attendance at Leidos or customer sites as required

Salary: £47,600 - £61,000

Are you ready for your next career challenge?..

Role overview:

Enterprise Supply Chain Services (ESCS) is part of the Leidos UK solution responsible for sourcing and procurement, inventory, planning and order management.

The team is developing a new supply chain management system, initially as a technical demonstrator, with the aim of developing it into a production-ready solution.

Apply systems engineering across the ESCS lifecycle, translating business and operational needs into coherent, traceable system requirements, interface specifications and model artefacts. The Systems Engineer will support the definition, analysis, integration and verification of ESCS capabilities, working across architecture, software, data, cloud, test and supplier teams to maintain the technical integrity of the end-to-end solution.

The role you will play

  • Develop and maintain clear, testable and traceable system requirements, interfaces and engineering artefacts.
  • Model and analyse the behaviour, interfaces and non-functional characteristics of the ESCS solution to support evidence-based engineering decisions.
  • Support system integration and verification by ensuring requirements, interfaces, dependencies and acceptance evidence remain coherent throughout delivery.

What will I be doing?

  • Elicit, analyse, decompose and manage functional and non-functional system requirements, maintaining traceability through design, integration, verification and acceptance.
  • Develop and maintain system models, functional and logical views, interface definitions and Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Analyse end-to-end system interactions, data flows, dependencies, constraints and behaviours across ESCS capabilities and external systems.
  • Undertake system-level analysis and modelling of non-functional characteristics, including availability, reliability, performance, capacity, resilience and recoverability.
  • Work with architects, software, data, cloud, security, test and supplier teams to ensure designs and implementations remain aligned with system requirements and defined interfaces.
  • Support verification and validation activities, including definition of acceptance criteria against requirements and requirements-to-verification traceability, and verification through the means of analysis and inspection techniques.
  • Identify, analyse and manage technical risks, assumptions, dependencies, issues and opportunities within assigned areas.
  • Contribute engineering evidence to technical reviews, design reviews, integration readiness and capability acceptance.
  • Maintain systems engineering artefacts under appropriate configuration and change control.

Required skills and capabilities

  • Systems engineering across the engineering lifecycle
  • Requirements engineering, decomposition and traceability for both functional and non-functional domains
  • System architecture and functional analysis
  • Interface definition and production of interfaces specifications (Interface Control Documents)
  • System modelling and Model-Based Systems Engineering principles
  • Functional and non-functional requirements analysis
  • Availability, reliability, performance and capacity analysis
  • Application and planning of verification and validation methods for requirements
  • Technical risk, assumption and dependency management
  • Strong use of engineering best practice, including engineering methodologies, expert configuration and change control and secure systems engineering principles.
  • Clear and proficient written and verbal communication

Required experience

  • Systems engineering experience on complex, software-oriented systems self-hosted within public and private cloud platforms.
  • Experience developing and managing system requirements in line with INCOSE best practice and maintaining traceability to design and verification compliance evidence throughout the engineering lifecycle.
  • Experience defining interfaces between systems, applications or services and producing associated interface documentation.
  • Experience applying modelling or analytical techniques to understand system behaviour, dependencies or non-functional characteristics.
  • Experience supporting system integration, verification and technical assurance in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
  • Ability to work independently within an assigned engineering scope and collaborate effectively with architects, software engineers, test engineers, suppliers and other engineering disciplines.

Desired experience

  • Solutions hosted across hyperscaler platforms; preferably AWS.
  • Complex systems integration programmes that include enterprise SaaS and Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) systems.
  • Supply chain, procurement, order management, logistics or ERP-related systems.
  • Model-Based Systems Engineering and appropriate modelling notation/tooling, such as SysML 1.6, SysML 2.0 or Archimate.
  • ·Availability, reliability, capacity or performance modelling of distributed systems.
  • Experience working within multidiscipline agile or hybrid engineering delivery environments.
  • Public sector, defence or security-conscious environments.
  • INCOSE ASEP/CSEP, Chartered Engineer or equivalent professional development towards recognised systems engineering accreditation.
  • Previous experience with business process modelling using BPMN 2.0.

Success in the role

  • System requirements are clear, consistent, testable and traceable through design, integration and verification.
  • Interfaces and dependencies are defined sufficiently early and clearly to support implementation and integration.
  • System models and analyses provide useful evidence for engineering and architectural decisions.
  • Non-functional requirements and system-level constraints are understood and reflected in the solution.
  • Integration and verification activities have a clear requirements, interface and acceptance basis.
  • Engineering risks, assumptions and inconsistencies are identified early and resolved collaboratively.
  • Systems engineering artefacts remain coherent, controlled and appropriate for technical assurance and acceptance.
  • Accurate and transparent reporting of progress, successes and impediments within designated team.
