Purpose Statement
To support the engineering, implementation, maintenance and monitoring of the Capitec server and storage environment. The System Engineer I works closely with cross-functional teams to ensure system reliability, performance and availability. The role focuses on operational support, troubleshooting, and assisting with system improvements to support business operations.
What you’ll be doing
- Support and maintain server and storage systems in a production environment
- Monitor system performance, stability and availability
- Assist with incident investigation, troubleshooting and resolution
- Support system configurations, implementations and upgrade
- Assist with change, release and basic deployment activities
- Perform routine maintenance and health checks
- Maintain accurate technical documentation
- Work with internal teams and vendors to resolve issues
- Contribute to continuous improvement of systems and processes
Education (Minimum)
- Grade 12 National Certificate / Vocational
Education (Ideal or Preferred)
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Information Technology
Knowledge and Experience
Minimum Experience:
- 2+ years’ experience in a Systems Engineering, Infrastructure or IT Support role
- Experience supporting server and/or storage environments
- Exposure to production support and incident handling
- Basic experience with system configuration, monitoring or maintenance
Knowledge:
Basic understanding of:
- Windows and/or Linux server administration
- Storage technologies
- Networking fundamentals
- Virtualisation concepts
- IT operations processes
Exposure to:
- Basic scripting (e.g. shell)
- Monitoring and alerting tools
- Backup and recovery processes
- Business continuity concepts
What Will Make You Stand Out
- Hands-on exposure to payments platforms (e.g. Postilion, ACI, PowerCard, UPF)
- Knowledge of ISO 8583, Visa/Mastercard, clearing & settlement
- AWS or cloud experience (EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, CloudWatch, etc.)
- Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude) for troubleshooting, scripting, ordocumentation
Beneficial Experience
- Exposure to EMV, ecommerce, wallets, or tokenisation
- Especially relevant as the team explores modernisation and potential migration of platforms (e.g.Postilion) to AWS
- DevOps and automation exposure (Git, CI/CD, Terraform, CloudFormation)
- Monitoring tools such as Splunk, Grafana, or Instana
- Exposure to microservices, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes
- Basic scripting or automation capability
- Awareness of PCI-DSS, HSM, or payment security practices
- Experience in banking or financial services environments
