A Brief Overview

The switchboard operator is primarily responsible for communication hospital switchboard and answering service to relay incoming, outgoing, and interoffice calls. Assists in monitoring security monitors and alarms. Operates communication systems, such as telephone, switchboard, intercom, two-way radio, or public address. Answers incoming calls, greets callers, provides information, transfers calls, and/or takes messages as necessary. Route emergency traffic appropriately. Pages individuals to inform them of telephone calls using paging equipment. Performs clerical duties as needed. Monitors alarm systems and contacts security staff members when necessary.

What you will do

  • Operate telephone switchboards and systems to advance and complete connections, including those for local, long distance, mobile, person-to-person, and emergency calls
  • Keep records of calls placed and received for answering service
  • Listen to customer requests, referring to appropriate department
  • Monitor automated systems for placing collect calls and intervene for a callers needing assistance
  • Observe signal lights on switchboards, and dial or press buttons to make connections
  • Offer special assistance to persons such as those who are unable to dial or who are in emergency situations
  • Operate paging systems or other systems of bells or buzzers to notify recipients of incoming calls
  • Perform clerical duties such as typing, proofreading, and sorting mail
  • Update contact information

Qualifications:

Qualifications

  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) (preferred)
  • Experience working with computers (preferred)
  • Previous experience answering multiple line phone system (preferred)
  • Previous health care experience (preferred)
  • Typing skills of 45+ WPM
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge and operation of telecommunications systems.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
  • Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Actively looking for ways to help people.
  • Managing one's own time and the time of others.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
