Job Description

  • Permanent, part time 33.25 hours per week

About the Role

You will provide an effective & efficient communications service and information to all Hospital staff, external agencies and the general public

  • Hospital Switchboard operations – Ensure Calls are answered in an appropriate manner and all callers are treated in a polite and courteous manner

  • Demonstrate high levels of communication skills appropriate to Switchboard functions

  • Operation and management of Hospital Paging system

  • Receipt, management and coordination of all Emergency Codes

  • Provide accurate patient enquiry information

  • Collation, maintenance and dissemination of information relating to Doctors, Medical & After-hours rosters

  • Provide accurate information to Hospital staff in relation to on-call staff, clinical rosters and directory information


Classifications for this position will range fromHS1 - HS17 ($58, 442 - $64,610 per annum pro rata)


Your Contribution

  • Experience in a health service environment is essential

  • Demonstrated high level communication and organisational skills

  • Strong computer literacy

  • Sound typing skills

  • Experience in a switchboard setting

  • Ability to participate as a member of a team in a dynamic work environment

  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.

  • Must be self-directing and demonstrate initiative

  • A valid Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check, or willing to obtain

About the Telecommunications Team

St Vincent’s Switchboard is located within the Inpatient Services Building at Fitzroy and operates 24 hours 7 days per week. Switchboard Operators manage a nucleus of information for staff, patients, relatives and external agencies

About The Royal Children's Hospital

The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) has been providing outstanding care for Victoria's children and their families for over 147 years.

We are the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and our care extends to children from Tasmania, southern New South Wales and other states around Australia and overseas.

With a passionate, highly skilled and committed staff campus wide of over 5,000, we provide a full range of clinical services, tertiary care and health promotion and prevention programs for children and young people.

We are the designated state-wide major trauma centre for paediatrics in Victoria and a Nationally Funded Centre for cardiac and liver transplantation.

When it comes to training and research we partner with the very best. Our campus partners, the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI) and The University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics, along with the RCH Foundation, are on site with the hospital in Parkville.
