Job Description

The City of Altoona is seeking a dedicated and reliable Custodian to join the team. The Custodian will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of municipal buildings and their surrounding grounds. This role includes performing various custodial tasks and ensuring that facilities are safe and welcoming for both employees and the public.

This position will work a swing shift: 8a-4p Monday, (Off Tuesday and Off Wednesday) Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The ideal applicant will need to be available to work alternating shifts Monday through Friday 8:30a-4:30p when needed to cover departmental needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Thoroughly cleaning floors through mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming; stripping, waxing, and polishing floors and furniture.
• Dusting furniture and fixtures, including polishing brass and cleaning windows.
• Sanitizing lavatories and replenishing restroom supplies.
• Maintaining the exterior of the premises by cutting grass, trimming hedges, and shoveling snow as necessary.
• Conducting minor repairs and replacing light bulbs; reporting significant damage to the appropriate personnel.
• Moving furniture and delivering supplies efficiently.
• Keeping inventory of custodial supplies and equipment; ordering materials when necessary.
• Maintaining custodial equipment in good working condition and following safety protocols.
• Assisting with occasional painting projects and carrying out other maintenance tasks.
• Opening and closing facilities as needed, ensuring security and safety.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Familiarity with custodial equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Knowledge of safe cleaning practices and minor repair techniques.
• Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
• Capacity to work independently while managing time efficiently to complete daily tasks.
• Physical ability to lift heavy objects and remain on feet for extended periods.
• Strong attention to detail in maintaining cleanliness and facility safety.
• Ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues and public visitors.
