Starting Wage: $13.00 per hour

Closing Date: Open Until Filled

Shift/Workdays and Hours: Variable

Assigned worksite may include the following locations: City Park Waterpark, CiCo Waterpark, or Northview Waterpark. Work will be performed outside, which could expose the staff to various outside atmospheric conditions including extreme heat. Noise and activity levels will be varied.

The Swim Lesson Instructor will provide instruction in alignment with Swim America™, a national learn-to-swim program. Swim America™ is goal-driven and technique-oriented. Swim instruction sessions run four (4) days a week for three (3) 2-week sessions, as well as Saturdays for private lessons. The program adjusts swim coaches to the appropriate skill levels of the swimmers enrolled. Swim coaches teach participants to swim according to the program standards. Certification and training is provided to all staff.

Job Duties

  • Provide excellent customer service and possess a service philosophy that reflects the mission of the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Follow directions from the MPRD supervisor, Swim America™ program director, and Swim America™ site head.
  • Teach the daily activities of the swim lessons program.
  • Regularly communicate with Swim America™ site head to ensure all organizational goals are met.
  • Communicate orally and in writing with customers, other lifeguards, and supervisors.
  • Able to establish and maintain cooperative professional working relationships with others, individually and in a team environment.
  • Work in a team composed of other Swim America™ site heads, swim coaches, Lifeguards, Head Lifeguards, Assistant Managers, and Managers.
  • Learn, carry out, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Emergency Action Plans (EAP).
  • Make decisions quickly to respond to potential hazards or emergency situations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • Knowledge of swimming technique.
  • Knowledge of Swim America™ learn-to-swim program.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Early Childhood or Elementary Education experience.
  • Swim America™ or WSI certified.
  • Experience with swim teams or instruction on swimming techniques.

Other Information?

  • This is not a KPERS covered position.
  • Applicants must pass a background check.
  • Staff will be required to attend in-service training.
  • Waterparks are open from Memorial Day weekend until no later than Labor Day. As such, staff may be asked to work weekends and holidays.
  • To perform the essential functions of this position, staff will be required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, handle, feel, speak, hear, climb stairs, push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds.
