Summary:

The Suture Technician provides wound care and suturing of noncomplex wounds and supportive care for orthopedic injuries. They function as Physician Extenders and work in collaboration with Providers in the Emergency Room. The suture technician assists with (but is not limited to) laceration repair, abscess care, nail bed injuries, dental injuries, splinting/cast removal, and IV access. The Suture team at Akron and MV work directly with ED providers to do wound care and orthopedic care, but also assist with Ophthalmology, Surgery, Orthopedic and Plastic Surgery departments procedures.

Responsibilities

  1. Provide wound care and suturing of noncomplex wounds and supportive care for orthopedic injuries under the supervision of the attending physician and/or registered nurse.
  2. Administer medications as directed by Emergency Department providers, including local anesthesia and direct wound infiltration as part of primary wound care.
  3. Collaborate with providers to assess patient needs related to wound depth, orthopedic injury severity, and facilitate specialty referrals when appropriate.
  4. Educate patients and families on wound care, splint/cast care, and home instructions, reinforcing follow-up plans.
  5. Document all care and procedures accurately in accordance with hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
  6. Assist in departmental education efforts, including supporting training for residents and medical students in suturing and wound care techniques.
  7. Demonstrate competency in addressing physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs of pediatric patients across all age groups.
  8. Engage as a collaborative team member, participating in quality improvement initiatives and maintaining awareness of departmental updates.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

Other information:

Technical Expertise:

  1. Experience in suture is preferred.
  2. Experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse [LPN], Paramedic, and/or Surgical Technician is required.
  3. Current Health Care Provider BLS training from the American Heart Association is required.

Education and Experience

  1. Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required. Graduate of an accredited paramedic program, an accredited surgical technologist program or a Graduate from an accredited school of licensed practical nursing.
  2. Licensure and Certification: A current, valid Certified EMT-Paramedic, Certified Surgical Technician (CST) or LPN license in the state of Ohio. Licensure and/or Certification is required upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required. Additional certifications (e.g., PEARS, PALS, ACLS, TNCC, NRP) may be required based on assignment or department/unit.

b. Within 6 months of hire candidate will need to complete approx. 100 hours classroom training (to include didactic training and orthopedic splint training) and approx. 560 hours of clinical training (to include 250 clinical cases and successful completion of the Suture Training Program objectives).

  1. Years of relevant experience: Two (2) years of experience in healthcare relevant to education and certification is required. Experience in suture is preferred.
  2. Years of supervisory experience: none
