ArcelorMittal North America is looking for a Sustainable Development Manager. To be successful in this role, you should provide leadership, governance, and cross-functional guidance to drive our ESG regulatory compliance and sustainability performance across the segment.

Job summary

The Sustainable Development Manager will report to our Chief Financial Officer and will drive the sustainable development compliance and performance across the North American segment. This position will manage ESG regulatory reporting and the implementation of sustainability strategies, working with the North America teams and operations.

  • This position will oversee preparation, implementation, and delivery of the company’s ESG regulatory disclosures, including CSRD and SEC and will work across ArcelorMittal project delivery teams.
  • The North America segment Sustainable Development Manager role is to manage the delivery, governance, and reporting of ArcelorMittal’s sustainability development strategy within the North America segment, helping to position the organization as an industry leader in its region.
  • The role reports into the North America leadership team working with the business units and functions to drive sustainable change through influencing and supporting senior colleagues to integrate sustainable development into the day-to-day business.
  • The position will work closely with the global group level sustainable development and related functions (finance, environment, health & safety, compliance, human resources, etc.) to feed into the overall sustainability development strategy for the global group and to ensure that it is embedded throughout the North America segment.

Main tasks

The key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Adhere to the company’s health & safety culture and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment; follow all safety protocols during daily activities and promptly report any unsafe conditions or hazards encountered.
  • Provide support to business units in implementing Group level compliance requirements for CSRD, CS3D, EU Taxonomy, California Regulation and SEC climate reporting requirements and provide focal point for feeding requisite information.
  • Monitor competitor, peer and customer sustainability strategies, targets, requirements, and performance to ensure that the North America segment’s sustainable development positioning allows it to lead in its core markets.
  • Conduct materiality assessments for the North America segment.
  • Be a member of the global group sustainable development network and contribute to development and implementation of global group level sustainability development policy, strategy, and targets, including science-based targets for climate and nature (air, water, land, biodiversity).
  • Cascade the corporate sustainable development strategy to the business units and support them in its implementation.
  • Drive the governance and decision-making processes for North America segment leadership and the corresponding decision-making bodies, including creating presentations, progress on project’s deliverables and execution.
  • Manage the preparation, implementation, and delivery of the segment’s business units responses to the ESG regulatory disclosures, including CSRD and SEC.
  • Oversee CSRD-related internal audits across business units, supporting the units throughout the process and ensuring the implementation of action plans when necessary.
  • Manage matrixed teams across business units, engage with key subject matter experts to deliver on expectations and scope, including the identification and support of any key areas of identified risk.
  • Work with North America segment leadership to drive continuous improvement towards segment sustainability development performance targets that are aligned with Group level targets.
  • Act as business unit ‘business partner’ for sustainability development, providing senior level advice and support as needed, connecting business units leads with technical leads in sustainability as appropriate and ensuring business units alignment with corporate strategic plans and objectives.

Must-haves

  • Undergraduate degree in sustainability, environmental management or similar
  • 5 to 10 years’ experience in the area
  • Membership in, or working towards, a relevant professional institution
  • Demonstrable experience of involvement in the development and successful execution of corporate strategy, programs, and initiatives in a large global/multinational or similar organization
  • Experience in building strong, collaborative business relationships to influence sustainable change and drive delivery sustainability programs
  • Strong knowledge of current sustainability best practice, initiatives and key market drivers including but not limited to carbon net zero, circular economy and human rights
  • Strong data analyses, analytical thinking, and benchmarking skills

It’s a plus if you have the following

  • Postgraduate level or equivalent qualifications in sustainability, environmental management or similar
  • Experience in mining or heavy industry in a corporate or consulting role
  • Experience working with government agencies on sustainability
  • Demonstrated experience of change management, performance improvement and project
  • Experience in managing and delivering large scale, cross functional projects in complex matrix organizations
