What We are Looking For

Under the direction of the Senior Director for Sustainability, the Sustainability Specialist for Operations and Engagement will be responsible for the implementation and execution of environmental sustainability initiatives for Baylor University and will work with diverse campus and community partners to build a culture of sustainability. Operational priorities will align with Baylor’s Sustainability Vision, Goals, and Strategies for, and progress towards sustainability goals should be integrated in co-curricular educational opportunities for students. The Sustainability Specialist will further contribute to a culture of sustainability at Baylor by developing and leading communications, events, and initiatives to highlight leading work and communicate priorities for Baylor’s commitment to sustainability. The Sustainability Specialist for Operations and Engagement will partner with academic and non-academic departments, student groups, and other on-campus groups to unify efforts and create synergies for sustainability related programs and initiatives across the institution.

A bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience are required. Three years of relevant experience is preferred.

Additional experience or education will be considered in lieu of one another.

The successful candidate will exhibit the following skills, abilities and other characteristics:

  • Familiarity with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) preferred
  • Background with marketing and communications for sustainability preferred

Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a Full-Time basis.

What You Will Do

  • Partner with Facilities Management team members to infuse sustainability principles into capital project design and daily operations & maintenance of facilities and grounds; including priority for recycling improvements
  • Implement events to support the institution’s sustainability vision and goals; including leadership of Campus Sustainability Month, Earth Month, Move 2 BU, and Bear-ly Used programs
  • Oversee outreach through website, newsletters, social media, etc., and implement co-curricular programs such as Eco Rep programs, Living Lab programs, and other programs where sustainability supports teaching, research, and student formation
  • Foster and maintain sustainability partnerships and initiatives between academic and non-academic departments within Baylor, as well as individual students and student groups, to synergize efforts and outcomes
  • Assist the Senior Director in maintaining connections with local and regional partners including but not limited to other higher education institutions, City of Waco, McLennan County, and State of Texas officials
  • Maintain and manage sustainability records and reporting requirements related to sustainability efforts, including but not limited to facility/campus energy usage, building certifications, waste/diversion, grounds stewardship, etc.
  • Support the Senior Director as requested with administrative functions
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor’s mission
  • Ability to comply with University policies
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
