
Sustainability Assistant Director

The City of Atlanta Department of Aviation (DOA) is seeking a highly skilled Assistant Director to join our dynamic Sustainability team.
The successful candidate will provide sustainability engineering direction, inter-disciplinary coordination and leadership to the Planning and Development design staff in execution of DOA design projects; provide sustainability support to the Capital Improvement Program through design reviews and coordination on related projects; and explore innovative sustainability solutions for application at the Airport to help reach net zero and other sustainability goals.
This position reports to the Director of Sustainability and helps to oversee the operations of the team. This role is for an experienced professional who routinely exercises project leadership over complex projects, trains other professionals, or serves as a specialized subject matter expert in one or more specific areas.
Works independently and only sees a supervisor occasionally for administrative supervision on assignments given in terms of broad general objectives, limits and organizational priorities.

· Assisting in overseeing the operations of the team
· Collaborating with stakeholders to incorporate sustainable design principles into new construction projects, including selecting environmentally friendly materials, optimizing energy systems, and implementing renewable energy sources.
· Coordinating with contractors, ATL staff and City of Atlanta Department of Procurement officials to prepare bidding documents
· Contributing to sustainability grant writing, management and implementation
· Contributing to the achievement and maintenance of LEED, Envision, ParkSmart and other green certifications for Airport projects
· Analyzing current operations to identify areas for improvement in sustainability performance including energy usage, water consumption, waste diversion, and emissions reduction
· Conducting research on best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements in sustainability
· Evaluating the benefits and impacts of sustainability initiatives
· Preparing sustainability reports, presenting findings to leadership, and communicating sustainability goals and initiatives to internal and external audiences.
· Contributing to publication of annual ESG report and maintenance of membership in the Airports Carbon Accreditation program
· Contributing to creation and implementation of sustainability plans and strategies for the airport
· Supporting waste management and recycling programs at the Airport
· Providing coaching and mentoring to junior team members
· Performing other related duties as assigned
Direction received is very general and focuses on end results and is typically collaborative in nature. Position plans own work and project schedules and sequences.

· Ability to conduct or understand energy audits
· Ability to understand construction drawings, specifications, and calculations
· Ability to handle required mathematical calculations using engineering and statistical calculations
· Ability to quickly come up to speed on new technologies
· Skilled in operating a basic computer and software

· Ability to balance competing priorities
· Ability to assemble information and make written reports and documentation in a concise, clear and effective manner
· Working knowledge of basic project management principles
· Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline
· 5 years of progressively responsible sustainability design experience covering buildings, bridges or other structural forms. Candidates with less experience who demonstrate exceptional qualifications will be considered
· Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related discipline
· Professional Engineer registration in Georgia
· Working knowledge of AutoCAD and civil design software; knowledge of civil engineering principles
· Experience with implementation of energy efficiency, water conservation, waste diversion, or other sustainability measures
· Familiarity with requirements for third party sustainability certifications such as LEED, Envision, and ParkSmart
· Working knowledge of contracting procedures
· Ability to handle conflicting project demands and set priorities
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Strong quantitative, analytical, and research skills
· Strategic problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills
· Valid State Issued Driver’s License required.
