Job Description

The Rules & Standards Department is seeking a highly motivated Surveyor to lead strategic Rule Development projects. This individual will serve as both project lead and primary author, working across ABS Corporate Class, Survey Operations, Technology, and other key functions to develop, refine, and future-proof the ABS Rules. The role spans a wide range of topics, from business-critical notations and core conventional requirements that underpin classification to emerging technologies such as new energy solutions, digitalization, autonomy, and advanced materials, as well as other areas both within and beyond the individual’s current expertise.

What You Will Do:

  • Act as project lead and primary author for major Rule development projects.
  • Develop proposed Rule changes.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts across ABS, including Corporate Class, Survey Operations, and Technology.
  • Engage external stakeholders, including Technical Committee members, clients, and Flag Administrations.
  • Identify operational readiness needs and initiate the development of Freedom content, training, quality system documents, and related materials.
  • Maintain awareness of Rule development needs and support the development of short- and long-term plans.
  • Ensure the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of all projects within the assigned area of responsibility.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • Degree or diploma from a tertiary institution in a relevant field of engineering or physical science, based on a minimum two-year program; or
  • Qualification from a marine or nautical institution, along with relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship officer.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Currently serving as a Surveyor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines.
  • Knowledge of applicable Rules and regulations, including the impact of Rule applications and interpretations.
  • Knowledge of company business policies and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to maintain positive relationships with stakeholders and peers.
  • Ability to undertake short and long-term planning to ensure the efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
  • Knowledge of ship engineering systems and machinery.
  • Ability to analyze problems and propose solutions.
  • Responsiveness to stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System.

Physical Requirements:

  • Where allowed by local laws, a pre-employment physical examination is mandatory.
  • The role of surveyor/auditor requires sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, and both visual and auditory acuity to perform the listed duties effectively.
  • The ability to climb vertical ladders up to nine meters and navigate steep steps is essential.
  • Shall be capable of working at heights on various staging and lifting equipment.
  • Shall be able to maneuver in tight spaces and work inside confined areas for extended periods, including kneeling and crawling.
  • The role may involve exposure to industrial environments, potential injury risks, extreme weather conditions, and demanding physical activities.
  • Shall be able to lift at least 25 lbs. / 11.34 kgs.
  • The use of small tools and the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), in accordance with ABS safety procedures, may be required.

Reporting Relationships:

Generally reports to a Managing Principal Engineer but may report to others depending on specifics of assignment.
