This position performs general surveying duties of a survey crew member; including performing necessary calculations to obtain field survey data and/or assisting with specialized surveying work under the supervision of a Registered Land Surveyor or licensed Professional Engineer. Work requires travel and may require contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for the Survey Technician I or II include:

  • Operates survey instruments such as level, transit, theodolite, electronic distance meter, total survey station and data collector.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

    Additional duties for a Survey Technician I include:

  • Assists in conducting technical geodetic and satellite surveys, which require the use of special high-accuracy techniques for mapping projects and related engineering functions.

  • Assists in traversing horizontal and vertical control points between satellite points.

  • Selects instruments and equipment needed for the day; ensures equipment and instruments are clean and operational.

    Additional duties for a Survey Technician II include:

  • Conducts technical geodetic and satellite surveys, which require the use of special high-accuracy techniques for mapping projects and related engineering functions.

  • Obtains, processes, and analyzes raw field survey data collected from electronic survey equipment and/or GPS.

  • Selects instruments and equipment needed for the day.

  • Traverses horizontal and vertical control points between GPS control points.

  • Operates survey instruments such as level, transit, theodolite, electronic distance meter, total survey station and data collector.

  • Reads survey maps and construction plans.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience

-Survey Technician I = No experience required.

-Survey Technician II = 2 YEARS surveying, drafting, cartography, mathematics, geography, GIS, construction, or engineering related experience.

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

    Competencies:

The required competencies for the Survey Technician I or II Include:

  • Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments

  • GPS, geodetic and GNSS surveying

  • Automated survey systems

  • Using surveying tools, equipment and instruments

  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems

  • Using GPS equipment and software

  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
