Assist with a variety of survey tasks to provide precision survey services; plan, establish and maintain the City's horizontal and vertical control networks; complete and correct field work including the set up and operation of instruments and monitor survey control stations.

Examples of duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  1. Prepare, set up and operate surveying equipment in the field including but not limited to a theodolite, total station, automatic or standard level, electronic distance measuring devices or a global positioning system receiver.
  2. May perform complex surveying computations; establish controls for staking; read and transfer data to field plans.
  3. Prepare, aim and move targets, lights and prisms when making horizontal and zenith angle measurements; determine distances by accurate taping and by using electronic distance measuring devices.
  4. Read, interpret, review and/or annotate topographic maps, plats, construction plans and other related materials; check computer printouts for accuracy and completeness. May provide sketches and descriptions for horizontal and vertical monumentation and monitoring projects.
  5. Maintain field notes to ensure accuracy and completeness: perform field data-entry and/or computations as needed.
  6. May set alignment and grade for various construction projects including street curb, utilities, footings, berms, drainage channels and bridge crossing. May calculate traverses, horizontal angles and distances used on surveying projects.
  7. May assist with office computations, publications of horizontal and vertical control reference and transfers of horizontal and vertical monuments. Perform various drafting tasks using Civil 3D.
  8. Record and maintain field notes, files and records of surveying activities.
  9. Perform traffic and safety control as needed while working on various projects; perform required maintenance on survey equipment.
  10. Load and unload surveying equipment, materials and supplies to provide safe transport and prevent loss or damage. Maintain sufficient levels of supplies and equipment in vehicle.
  11. Operate vehicles and hand held radios in field surveying activities.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. May serve as Survey Crew Supervisor in the absence of Survey Crew Supervisor.
  2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED; and

Four (4) years experience in any combination of the following areas:

  • surveying
  • drafting
  • civil engineering
  • mapping


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Supplemental information

Environmental:
Office and field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to computer screens, heat, cold, dust, smoke, fumes, gases, moving objects/vehicles, inclement weather conditions; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; work on slippery or uneven surfaces; work closely with others.

Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; heavy, moderate or light lifting and carrying; repeated bending, climbing; operating motorized equipment and vehicles; good vision.
