Days (United States of America)The primary function of the surgical technologist is the "scrub technologist" in the surgical suite. The surgical technologist may be assigned other functions as deemed necessary.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

  • Knows and follows aseptic technique when performing scrub duties and support duties for the department.

  • Assists in carrying out the patient's plan of care by performing assigned tasks within scope of practice of the surgical technologists and according to the unit guidelines of care, facility policies and procedures, nursing policies and procedures, and legal limitations.

  • Functions as a surgical scrub technician in the operating room/procedure room under the direction of the Registered Nurse.

  • Assists with gowning and gloving other members of the surgical team.

  • Assists with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures.

  • Assists with skin preparations and with draping of patients.

  • Handles specimens in accordance with facility policy and procedures.

  • Participates in the final “Time Out” process in the OR or procedure room to verify the correct patient, the correct procedure, the correct site and if applicable, the correct side.

  • Cleans and/or disinfects instruments and equipment after use and returns it to the proper area for storage or processing.

  • Participates in sponge, instrument, and needle count with the circulation nurse.

  • Demonstrates ability to understand and use sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, instrument washers, and other designated processors.

  • Assists with stocking, replenishing and preparation of supplies.

  • Helps to ensure that “specialty carts’, equipment, supplies, etc., are cleaned monthly, checked for outdates as needed.

  • Terminally clean OR at the end of the day.

  • Transports and escorts patients to various areas and for discharge.

  • Assists with the maintenance, selection and preparation of instruments, equipment and supplies necessary to maintain a state of readiness for operative cases.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information

  • Supports patients in the practice of their cultural and spiritual beliefs within limits of the plan of care.

  • Adjusts patient care based on the age-specific physiological and psychosocial needs of patients.

  • Participates in educational and performance improvement activities.

  • Maintain educational requirements to keep certification status for Certified Surgical Techs.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education and Formal Training

  • High school graduate or equivalent required

  • Completion of Surgical Technologist Course from an Accredited CAHEA Program preferred

Work Experience

  • 1 year experience as a surgical technologist preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Works with complex monitoring and life- saving equipment.

  • Reads, writes, and speaks English.

  • Knowledge of Standard Precautions.

  • Position involves skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific physiological/psychosocial/ developmental/ spiritual needs of patients typically served.

  • Demonstrates self-directed learning and achievement of assigned clinical area objectives.

Physical Requirements

  • Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needs

  • Visual acuity for observation of patients

  • Long periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting

  • May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
