Job Description

Performs perioperative scrub techniques/procedures, nursing care and patient preparation as a surgical team member under direct nursing supervision.

Job Responsibility

  • * Performs pre-surgical scrub techniques/procedures as a surgical team member.
    • Scrubs hands and arms, and dons gown and gloves.
    • Sets-up operating room tray, arranging instruments, sponges, sutures, catheters, drains and dressings.
    • Prepares operating room for surgery by obtaining and setting-up supplies and equipment.
    • Prepares patient for surgery in prescribed manner to provide a surgically sterile field.
  • * Assists Circulating Nurse, as directed, during surgery including, but not limited to:
    • Passing/counting instruments and sponges, dressings, and with other routine operating room functions as requested.
    • Operating peripheral equipment including, but not limited to lights, tables, and suction machines during surgery.
    • May assist Nurse in planning and labeling specimens obtained during surgery.
  • * Performs post-surgical care of operating room including, but not limited to:
    • Disposing of soiled linens, gloves, and debris; and
    • Preparing instruments for sterilizing according to procedure.
  • * Performs inter-operative related duties including, but not limited to:
    • Maintenance of instruments and equipment.Reporting malfunctioning instruments and equipment to management.
    • Performing related support duties including, but not limited to
      • Transporting patients to and from operating room; and
      • Maintaining appropriate records.
    • Assists Nurse with orientation of new staff.
  • Performs related duties, as required.

Job Qualification

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • AAS Degree in Operating Room Technology, preferred. Knowledge of surgical instruments and specialized equipment, required.
  • Successful completion from a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologist, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), required.
    • *a person may be employed or contracted with to practice surgical technology during the 12-month period immediately following successful completion of a surgical technology program, but may not continue to be employed beyond that period without documentation that the employee holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential required.
  • Must be and remain in good standing with NYS regulations, required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience as an Operating Room Technician.
