Surgical Technologist I (Part-Time Days)

Schedule: Part-Time, 20 hours per week, Day ShiftRotating weekends and holidays are required.

Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and/or RN Service Leads, the Surgical Technologist works directly with surgeons and physicians to facilitate the safe and effective performance of invasive surgical procedures.

The Surgical Technologist demonstrates expertise in aseptic and sterile technique while applying knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, instrumentation, and advancing surgical technologies. This role requires the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team through continuous assessment of the procedure and patient condition to promote safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical outcomes.

The Surgical Technologist assists with minimally invasive, invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures across a variety of surgical specialties. Working as an integral member of the perioperative team, the Surgical Technologist helps maintain a safe sterile field and supports exceptional patient care by ensuring the surgeon has the appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment throughout each procedure.

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for maintaining clinical competency, complying with departmental policies and procedures, and performing within the established scope of practice.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Operates, manages, inspects, and maintains surgical equipment and instrumentation in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and organizational policies.
  • Functions as an active member of the surgical team, utilizing knowledge of the patient's history, allergies, and intraoperative plan of care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medications and pharmacological agents introduced to the sterile field, including proper identification, labeling, and dosage verification in accordance with policy.
  • Maintains a sterile environment and consistently applies aseptic technique to promote patient safety.
  • Completes all required documentation accurately and within the Surgical Technologist scope of practice.
  • Meets the expectations and competencies of the Surgical Technologist I Clinical Recognition Ladder.
  • Demonstrates safe handling of sharps and adherence to sharps safety initiatives.
  • Applies evidence-based practices for intraoperative temperature management.
  • Ensures accurate specimen collection, handling, labeling, and documentation.
  • Communicates effectively with the surgical team using appropriate medical terminology.

Required Education

  • Individuals who worked as a Surgical Technologist in a surgical facility prior to July 1, 2013, qualify under Connecticut grandfathering provisions.
  • Individuals entering the profession on or after July 1, 2013, must have successfully completed an Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology from an accredited program.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program recognized by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAAHEP) or completion of an equivalent structured surgical technology training program.
  • Certification is required for new hires who did not work as a Surgical Technologist in a surgical facility prior to July 1, 2013, in accordance with Connecticut regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous surgical technologist experience in an acute care hospital or surgical facility is preferred.

Compensation

Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.

$31.62 - $39.47 - $50.06
