Responsible for providing intraoperative care to the surgical patient. Prepares for cases according to the surgeon's preferences, needs of patient, etc. Passes instruments to the surgeon at the surgical field, and cares for instruments at the end of the surgical procedure, insures accuracy of counts, assists in maintaining privacy and confidentiality of the patient, maintains safety of the patient and is responsible for application of the principles of asepsis at all times in order to maintain the integrity of the sterile field. The Surgical Technologist functions under the direct supervision of the RN.

Essential Functions
-Checks sterile condition of O.R. suite and of sterile equipment, instruments, and supplies.
-Changes into operative clothing, scrubs hands and arms, and puts on sterile gown and gloves.
-Arranges sterile setup for operation; instrumentation, supplies, and equipment.
-Passes instruments, sponges, and sutures to surgeon and surgical assistant maintaining position of instruments and orderliness of sterile field.
-Assists with sponging and suction of operative site and retractor positioning.
-Assists circulating nurse to prepare patient in prescribed position for the type of surgery to be performed, this includes draping.
-May assist in preparation of operative area of patient.
-May assist the Anesthesiologist during induction phase of anesthesia.
-Adjusts lights and other equipment as directed.
-Assists other team members, upon completion of surgery, in moving patient onto wheeled stretcher for delivery to the recovery room.
-May assist in transport of patient back to nursing unit.
-Assists in clean up of operating theater following operation including disposal of used linen, gloves, instruments, utensils, equipment, and waste.
-Terminally cleans room and equipment when required.
-May assist in counting sponges, needles, and instruments during and after operation.
-May prepare operative specimens, place in preservation solution, and deliver to laboratory for analysis.
-Shares pertinent data with co-workers.
-Assists with maintaining specialty cards and preference cards of surgical service physicians.
-May record data on patient data sheet.
-Sterilizes instruments and equipment by autoclave, disinfectant solutions, and ethylene oxide following C.S.R. procedures.
-May be required to work on the nursing units in a nursing assistant capacity.
-Performs other related duties as assigned by the Clinical Coordinator.
-Fully accountable for work, call, and behavior.
-Identifies own learning needs and seeks opportunities for self growth.
-Uses and shares skills gained at continuing education classes.
-Attends mandatory staff meetings unless excused by the Nurse Manager.
-Has completed annual policy and procedure review.
-Has attended mandatory in-service for: CPR, Fire/Safety, Infection Control.

Licenses and Credentials
Certified Surgical Technologist [CST] - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required
Experience
Must meet at least one of the following requirements according to Chapter 371 or the Acts of 2012* (effective July 1, 2013): 1.Was employed in any healthcare facility as a surgical technologist prior to July 1, 2013. 2.Completed a surgical technologist training program in the military or other public service corps. required and Prior O.R. experience. 0-1 year required
