Franciscan Health Munster Campus701 Superior Ave Munster, Indiana 46321The Surgical Technologist First Assistant performs various tasks supporting perioperative services, including preparation of operating room, transport of patients, supplies, equipment, and specimens. This position assists surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other members of an operating room team by preparing patients for their procedures and sterilizing equipment to maintain environmental cleanliness before, during and after surgical procedures. This position, also, provides technical assistance to the surgeon by passing instruments, assuring the functioning of instruments, and keeping instruments free of debris during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist First Assistant delivers aid in exposure, hemostasis, wound closure, and other technical functions during operative procedures. This position is able to perform all duties of the Surgical Technologist I, II, and III.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

  • Post-Procedure Clean Up Assists in the cleanup of the surgical environment after a procedure, ensuring the operating room is cleaned and set up for turnover to the next procedure. Removes equipment from surgery room and follows proper procedure to dispose of contaminated equipment and supplies. Handles and disposes of sharps, biohazardous waste, regular trash, and contaminated linens following procedures and policies.
  • Clinical Resources Assists in updating clinical resources such as instrument and preference lists and orientation aids.
  • Hemostasis Conducts hemostasis procedures including the application of electrosurgical unit to clamps, vessels, and tissue, sponging bodily fluids and stylizing suction techniques.
  • Wound Closure Conducts various types of wound closure and suturing, applies skin staples and appropriately approximates the skin to best facilitate the healing process.
  • Exposure Performs retractor placement and manipulation, and management of instruments in the operative field to prevent obstruction of the surgeon's view; anticipates exposure needs based on knowledge of the surgeon's preference, procedure, and anatomical structures.
  • Surgical Instrument Prep Prepares for surgical procedures by obtaining appropriate instruments, supplies and equipment and appropriate records for specific surgical procedures; opens surgical supplies/equipment, cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization process and restocks pre-operative carts.
  • Postoperative Assistance Provides postoperative assistance by selecting and applying appropriate dressings, securing drainage systems, conducting room turnover, and transport of the patient to bed and to PACU as necessary.
  • Changes Recognizes appropriate changes and updates procedure cards as needed.
  • Surgical Scrub Scrubs basic and complex surgical procedures for general, orthopedic, ob/gyn, genitourinary, otorhinolaryngology, neurosurgical procedures, and other surgical procedures.
  • Preferred: DaVinci robotic experience
  • Preferred: General surgery and orthopedics experience

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required High School Diploma/GED
  • Required: Basic Life Support Program (BLS) - American Heart Association
  • Required: Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
