Job Description

The Surgical Quality Coordinator’s chief responsibility is to collect and submit reliable data to the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP). This is accomplished through high-quality surgical chart review and interpretation, data compilation, data analysis, patient/family interactions including documentation and entry into the ACS NSQIP database of all eligible surgeries for the hospital. The Coordinator, is responsible for collecting and interpreting NSQIP data and working collaboratively with the Surgical Program Leadership, NSQIP physician lead, Chief and Director, Patient Experience, Quality & Patient Safety in the implementation of NSQIP Quality Initiatives.

Qualifications:

• Three-year Diploma from an Accredited College from a healthcare profession (RN,RT,RPN) required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. (RHIA, RHIT, RPN, RN, or BSN preferred but not required)
• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario or other health related discipline is preferred
• Minimum one year experience in hospital surgery department, surgery clinic, clinical research or medical records. Clinical chart review and abstraction experience preferred
• Ability to find specific information through various clinical systems (medical records, surgery clinics, surgical information management system, death index, direct patient contact, surgeon contact).
• Clinical chart review and abstraction experience
• Ability to analyse data and trends, and identify potential improvement opportunities, make recommendations for best practice, and highlight patient safety concerns
• Computer and Internet experience required - familiarity and comfort with MS Office products is essential for success in this position (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
• Excellent statistical analysis skills
• Ability to determine feasibility of potential research, educational or clinical initiatives
• Strives to undertake all activities in an efficient and effective manner
• Proven ability in working effectively with all members of health care team (i.e. clinical managers, surgeons, health professionals and educators)
• Ability to build relationships and gain alignment for clinical support and be able to articulate questions to receive an appropriate level of support from superiors and peers

• Ability to work independently, and identify experts outside the hospital for assistance if required
• Active participation in work related initiatives
• Exhibits mature judgement in clinical, educational and administrative matters
• Ability to learn and apply hospital policies and procedures, relative legislation, Canadian Hospital Accreditation Standards, Health Records coding, etc.

• Strong problem solving and decision-making skills
• Ability to be an effective change agent
• Ability to identify potential patient or institutional risk and intervene appropriately
• Clinical knowledge of processes, procedures and pathways associated with care of a surgical patient
• Database data entry and/or management experience preferred
• Basic statistical knowledge preferred
• Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience preferred
• Successful completion of ACS NSQIP training/certification program
