Job Description

Surgical Orderly - Full Time

Shift: PMs, 1:00pm - 9:30pm

PATIENT POPULATION:
The patient population served can be all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.

Under the direction/supervision of the Unit Director, Clinical Manager and/or R.N. Staff, the Orderly performs duties of transporting of patients throughout the hospital, cleaning of the OR suites and ancillary areas, and other duties assigned as needed.

Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Must have and maintain current BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to hands-on patient care.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should be a high school graduate or equivalent.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required. Ability to speak English, read, and write legibly.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic computer skills.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should be a high school graduate or equivalent. Must have and maintain current BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to hands-on patient care.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
*Indicates Essential Function

1 * Transports patient(s) to and from various hospital and/or nursing units (e.g. Med/Surg, X-ray, discharge) as directed by the Clinical Supervisor.
2 * Communicates with clinical supervisor/circulating nurse pertinent patient information throughout shift.
a. Assists with case equipment need, moving procedure equipment, monitor carts, tourniquet machine, beds, OR tables and positioning equipment.
3 * Assists the Circulating Nurse with basic positioning needs, i.e. holding an extremity during a prep, assisting with positioning for a surgical procedure.
4 Obtains, prepares and/or transports specimens to lab ensuring proper lab slips, i.e. S&A, urine, stool.
5 Assists the surgical team with preparation/turnover of the operating rooms. Follows policy for cleaning and disinfection of the operating rooms.
6 Arranges operating room furniture and equipment according to needs for surgical procedures.
7 Performs terminal cleaning of operating rooms and surgical unit, according to policy.
8 * Be in attendance on site and arrive to work on time.
