The Surgical Navigator Medical Assistant coordinates the full continuum of care for patients undergoing

surgical procedures. This role ensures a seamless, patient-centered experience from initial surgical

consultation through post-operative recovery. Serving as a central point of contact for patients,

providers, and interdisciplinary teams, the Surgical Navigator MA facilitates timely access to care,

promotes surgical readiness, and supports optimal clinical outcomes while aligning with Marshall’s

standards for quality, safety, and patient experience.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Licensure/Certification:

· Completion of a Medical Assistant Program or previous Medical Assistant experience preferred.

· Current BLS certification required.

Knowledge/Experience:

· Minimum two (2) years in clinic, surgical services, or care coordination required.

· Prior experience in care coordination, navigation, or population health preferred.

· Familiarity with pre-operative clearances workflows and post-acute coordination preferred.

· Previous experience with injections, EKG’s, medication administration and/or taking vital signs

required.

· Knowledge of medical terminology, patient/family health education required.

· Basic computer/data entry and electronic medical record (EMR) experience required.

Skills:

· Strong organizational skills and the ability to reprioritize work demands as needed.

· Proficiency in EPIC preferred.

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.

· Accurate and clear clinical documentation in Electronic Medical Record.

· Excels in verbal and written interpersonal communication skills.

· Possesses a pleasant and friendly demeanor and ability to maintain a positive and team-oriented

attitude.

· Comfortable with regularly verifying and processing insurance eligibility and obtaining

authorization requests, including verifying personal credentials with external partners to obtain

this information (e.g., ID.me for identity verification for VA insurance coordination).
