The Surgical Navigation Technician I provides computer assisted surgical support for surgical cases requiring guided imaging. This support consists of preoperative image management, system set up and start up, intraoperative technical support, and system closedown and clean up. This role collaborates with all clinical leadership and works under the direction of the surgeon while in the operating room.

Minimum Education: Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program accredited by Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP) or by the State.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Certified through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association.

Work Experience: None.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of aseptic technique, surgical instrumentation, and ability to prepare instrumentation set based specialties. Excellent manual dexterity skills and be able to move in tight spaces with ease. Effective communication skills, conscientious and self-motivated to assure excellent care to patients. Ability to operate system software and trouble shoot issues. Proven ability to work under pressure and respond quickly to specific instructions.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Provides in room system technical support during the case under the direct supervision of the surgeon which includes mapping, integration with O-arm images, and changing system projections. Uploads all imaging to the system prior to case assuring adequate image quality, trouble shoots any issues with the system and situation. Assures preoperative imaging (either MRI or CT) are completed prior to the case. Confirms outside images are configured properly to be installed on Radiology Server and/or system. Verifies all needed supplies and instrumentation are in place prior to the case. Assists surgeon with actual navigation of case as well as capturing ordered images. Closes system down, assures all images are captured as ordered, and ensures imaging is archived per policy.

Decision Making: Independent judgment in planning sequence of operations and making minor decisions in a complex technical or professional field.

Working Relationships: Coordinates activities of others (does not supervise). Leads others in same work performed (does not supervise). Works directly with patients and/or customers. Works with internal and/or external customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff. Works frequently with individuals at Director level or above.
