How You'll Contribute

A Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) who excels in this role:

  • Provides direct assistance to the surgeon during operative and invasive procedures.
  • Positions patients to provide optimal exposure for surgical procedures while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
  • Utilizes stabilizing equipment and positioning devices as appropriate.
  • Provides visualization of the operative site through tissue manipulation, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.
  • Utilizes appropriate techniques to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
  • Assists with wound closure, application of dressings, and securing drainage systems.
  • Maintains sterile technique and adheres to infection prevention standards.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and surgical team to promote efficient workflow and patient safety.
  • Ensure surgical equipment, supplies, and instruments are utilized appropriately throughout procedures.
  • Collaborates effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and other members of the surgical team.
  • Participates in required education, competency validation, and performance improvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical First Assist program required.
  • Associate’s degree preferred.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Currently Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Required Skills

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound clinical judgment and make decisive decisions.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, sterile techniques, and patient safety practices.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serve internal coworkers and external customers, including patients, physicians, vendors, contractors, and visitors.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation requirements, organizational policies, and recommended practices.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and compliance initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience

  • Previous Surgical First Assist experience preferred.
