The Position

As a member of the Overdoes Prevention Site (OPS) team, the Support Worker assists people who use substances by providing harm reduction services, supporting referrals to health and social services, and encouraging safe use practices in a welcoming, low-barrier environment. The role contributes to a respectful and safe space by collaborating with peers, staff, and community partners, and supporting participants in accessing the resources they choose.

Qualifications

  • High school completion required.
  • Familiarity with mental health, addiction services, and community resources.
  • Experience in social services, community health, harm reduction, or a related field.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed, harm reduction, and culturally safe practices.
  • Ability to de-escalate conflict in a non-violent manner.
  • Awareness of local “street culture.”
  • Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check clearance.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to provide respectful, non-judgmental support to diverse participants
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles, overdose response, and substance use services
  • Ability to recognize signs of distress and respond appropriately in crisis situations
  • Effective verbal de-escalation and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to connect participants with community, health, and social service resources
  • Strong observation, documentation, and record-keeping skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment
  • Ability to maintain cleanliness, follow infection control practices, and support site operations
  • Strong organizational skills, including inventory monitoring and basic administrative support
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
