About the Unit

Yara Fertilizer Zambia Limited is looking to fill the permanent position of a Supply Chain & Operations Manager to manage and take responsibility for the operational business support services, including but not limited to stock availability, transport and dispatch. The incumbent will be required to drive strategic stock availability initiatives, enhance logistics, and ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of products. This role contributes to managing the end-to-end supply chain process, ensuring HESQ and operational efficiency, and leading departmental staff to achieve business objectives.

Area of responsibility: Zambia.

Living location: Lusaka, Zambia.

Reporting to: Operations Director – Africa & General Manager – Zambia Cluster.

Responsibilities

Supply Chain Management

  • Contributes to the product supply process from source to distribution
  • Contributes to developing and implementing transportation policies and procedures
  • Coordinates synergy between departments across the Zambia Cluster to ensure optimisation of Operations & Supply Chain priorities and requirements
  • Oversees the consolidation and maintenance of Sales Forecasting, Procurement Planning, Product Scheduling & Inventory Management models for the Zambia Cluster, within the assigned Africa unit guidelines and Cluster budgets
  • Assists with the optimal use of various supply corridors available via South Africa, Mozambique and Tanzania and subsequent logistical routes according to location specific product requirements throughout the Zambia Cluster

Operations Management

  • Coordinates efficient operations and interactions required across departmental functions and activities
  • Manages, optimizes and supports departmental users of the company’s SAP operational processes, including monitoring the accuracy and timeliness of all ERP transactions and analyzing the performance of these processes to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Manage local production requirements for blending and bagging operations when needed
  • Manage all 3rd party operations withing the business and ensure compliance according to Yara policies
  • Implement a robust asset care and maintenance program for all assets
  • Lead continuous improvement initiative across operations

Logistics, Transportation and Distribution Management

  • Develops and implement transportation policies and procedures
  • Own the negotiation of in country transportation rates and contracts with carriers whilst ensuring compliance with transportation regulations and industry standards
  • Own the inter-department liaison process to coordinate the requirements and movement of goods and materials
  • Own and optimizes the movement of goods and materials from the company’s facilities to receiving entities. This includes coordinating with suppliers, vendors, and carriers to schedule and manage the transportation of goods, as well as tracking and maintaining records of shipments
  • Ensures that shipments are delivered on time and in good condition, and for resolving any issues that may arise during the transportation process

Warehouse, Inventory Management and Stock control / transfer

  • Oversee facility management in Zambia
  • Coordinate with sales and production teams to forecast demand and manage inventory accordingly
  • Oversee inventory levels and transfers to ensure adequate supply while minimizing excess stock.
  • Implement inventory control measures to reduce losses and improve accuracy
  • Ensure adherence to stock take procedure and inventory management/integrity

Reporting

  • Monitor, measure and provide accurate reports for the operations department

People Management

  • Provide a safe, engaging and inclusive work environment for the operations team
  • Develop, lead, manage and enhance the people assets and talent pool within the department
  • Set and manage achievement of targets and objectives for the Supply Chain and Operations department

HESQ Compliance and Quality Control

  • Ensure compliance with local and international regulations and standards.
  • Implement and monitor quality control processes to maintain high standards.
  • Coordinate with regulatory authorities and conduct regular audits.
  • Own full implementation of HESQ initiatives and compliance to Yara TOPS/HESQ Procedures

Competencies

  • Computer literacy, navigation and advanced Excel skills critical and a prerequisite requirement.
  • Proficient ERP system navigation and experience in working on the SAP system
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills

Business Expertise, Leadership, Problem Solving, Interpersonal Skills

  • Proficient in the administration and audit functions of Operations & Supply Chain processes.
  • Departmental line management responsibility
  • Shared supervision responsibility of service providers and subcontracted transporters
  • Responsibility of solutions for the challenges faced in supply chain for Zambia and ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and drive corrective action.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain, logistics, procurement, operations, engineering or business
  • 5+ years supply chain/logistics experience.
  • 3+ years in a management role.
  • Experience in cross-border supply chains, distribution & customs clearance
  • Experience in demand forecasting and planning
  • Experience in warehousing operations, inventory management & inventory controls
  • Experience in negotiating transport and supplier contracts / tenders
  • Experience in health & safety management
  • Professional affiliation to Zambia Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (ZCILT)
