The purpose the Supplier Quality Engineer role is to proactively work with our suppliers to ensure we consistently receive high quality materials on time. This includes supplier auditing, supplier development / consultation, and supplier corrective action requests. This role is also responsible for supporting internal quality and maintaining our quality management system (QMS).
Responsibilities
Safety
- Wears PPE as outlined in the Sonny’s PPE Policy
- Identifies unsafe work behaviors and reports them to the Safety Manager
- Identifies unsafe work conditions and reports them to the Safety Manager
- Attends monthly safety trainings
- Follows lockout/tagout procedures prior to servicing or maintaining any equipment
- Wears uniform as required by policy and displays name badge at all times
- Maintains an organized and safe work area
- Keeps all walkways, emergency exits, and panels free from obstruction in accordance with Sonny’s requirements and all local, state, and national safety codes
- Works with the Safety Manager as required to implement process changes that improve safety in the building

- No lost time accidents (Time Span: 1 day - 2 months)
New Product Raw Material Analysis / Supplier Capability
- Works directly with engineering to understand raw material requirements for new product development (NPD) items
- Works with inspection team to inspect / document first articles as required
- Performs capability analysis (Cp / Cpk) to ensure the supplier and / or internal process will be able to consistently supply us with good product
- Accountability (Output)
- All first articles are efficiently inspected with results immediately communicated to our purchasing team
Supplier Corrective Action Requests / Continuous Improvement
- Effectively communicates problem statement to supplier through the use of the supplier corrective action request (SCAR) process and form including all pertinent information (purchase orders, PART numbers, quantities, etc.)
- Monitors SCAR list weekly and follows up weekly with any supplier with a past due open SCAR
- Offers support and resources to ensure the supplier performs a thorough root cause investigation addressing the SCARs problem statement
- Ensures that corrective action(s) stemming from a SCAR are validated in the next visit / audit of the supplier’s operation
- Accountability (Output)
- SCAR list is reviewed weekly and kept current (Time Span: 1 Week)
- All corrective actions stemming from the supplier corrective action request (SCAR) process shall be validated within 12 months or sooner depending on severity (Time Span: 1 year)
Supplier Development / Consultation
- Holds quarterly phone calls with key quality contacts at critical suppliers
- Offers resources, information, and some training on LEAN / Six-Sigma tools
- Recommends equipment / processes to enable our suppliers to comply with our requirements
- Analyzes suppliers from a weakness standpoint and communicates what is required for continued growth
- Documents all suggestions, support, and results in a quarterly supplier report for critical suppliers
- Works with Production Supervisors and Director of Quality Control and Continuous Improvement to prioritize projects
- Accountability (Output)
- Completes quarterly report for critical suppliers (Time Span: 3 months)
Supplier Auditing
- Ensures supplier audit checklist is current and relevant to fabricator certification clauses
- Creates annual supplier audit schedule based on documented audit frequency parameters and critical supplier list.
- Groups audits by location to reduce travel requirements
- Builds effective relationships with key quality personnel at critical suppliers
- Confirms corrective actions resulting from SCARs have been implemented and sustained
- Communicates audit reports and supports implementation of corrective action addressing observations and findings
- Supports development and growth and alerts business if a supplier does not have the necessary capability and or capacity to supply current and future demand
- Confirms that suppliers are complying with the Sonny’s Enterprises Product Change Notification (PCN) Policy
- Accountability (Output)
- Must complete 100% of scheduled audits (Time Span: 1 year)
Supplier Quality SOPs, Metrics, and Other Documentation
- Maintains all supplier quality standard operating procedures (SOPs), forms, checklists, standard work, and any other associated documentation
- Creates and maintains quantitative, clear, and achievable metrics that fall inline with the Quality Control and Continuous Improvement Department goals and objectives
- Accountability (Output)
- Report metrics quarterly detailing status, trends, strategy, etc. (Time Span: 3 months – 1 year)
Support Internal QMS
- Maintains, updates, and integrates Cority QMS software at Sonny’s facilities as required
- Maintains and presents dashboards, projects, and action item lists relevant to the quality team
- Support quality inspectors with first article inspection, quality alerts, data analysis, etc.
- Communicate well with quality inspectors and engineering to ensure everyone is on the same page with internal and supplier changes

- The supplier quality engineer will actively promote and strive to achieve a successful quality management system and a positive hardworking team environment

Qualifications
Education and Formal Training:
- B.S. in relevant engineering field required (Mechanical, Industrial, etc.)
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt Certification a plus
- Lean Certification a plus
- Trained Auditor a plus
Experience:
- Experience visiting and auditing suppliers a plus
- ERP system in a manufacturing environment a plus
- Experience with Lean material management and SAP software a plus
- Kaizen event leadership and coordination experience a plus
- Poka-yoke experience a plus
Software and Tools Used:
- Checklists, schedules, charts
- Control Charts
- Inspection Tools and Measurement Devices (CMM, micrometers, calipers, tape measures, etc.)
- ERP Software (SAP)
- Excel, Power BI, and other Microsoft Suite products
- Root Cause Analysis Frameworks including 5-why, Ishikawa/Fishbone Analysis, 8D/6D as required
- LEAN / Six Sigma analysis tools and frameworks
Working Conditions & Physical Demands:
- Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment.
- Must be able to work in non-climate controlled environment where ambient air temperature can exceed outside air.
- The use of safety PPE equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, steel-toe shoes, and hardhats. Loose fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted
- Regularly required to stand or sit and move about the facility. Ability to stand for 8 hours per day.
- Regular [at least monthly] travel to supplier facilities is required
