JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Asset Management & Technical Standards, the Supervisor, Technical Standards serves as the technical authority for Hydro Ottawa’s distribution infrastructure and station design, and Protection & Control (P&C) systems. This role leads a team of engineers responsible for the governance, development, and lifecycle maintenance of the technical standards, protection philosophies and settings, operating procedures, and standard work methods that define how the grid is constructed, protected, and operated. By overseeing equipment approvals, station design quality assurance, and the governance of system coordination reviews and relay configuration logic, the Supervisor, Technical Standards ensures that all assets meet rigorous safety, regulatory, and operational excellence benchmarks.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage and mentor a team of Engineers and Engineering Interns; establish team goals, optimize workload distribution, conduct performance reviews, and ensure high-quality technical and practical output.
• Own the development, governance, and continuous improvement of technical standards, equipment specifications, and P&C/power quality guidelines to ensure a uniform, coordinated, cost-effective and safe distribution system.
• Govern the creation, verification, and management of all protection system settings, coordination reviews, and control logic programming required to safeguard the distribution system.
• Direct the deployment and configuration of engineering modeling tools for structural line design and for protection coordination.
• Govern the technical approval process for third-party attachments, ensuring external utility and municipal equipment does not compromise the safety, structural capacity, or electrical reliability of Hydro Ottawa’s assets.
• Oversee the quality assurance lifecycle and approval of major stock equipment and P&C devices, including the review of manufacturer test reports and the evaluation of new materials for integration into the system.
• Lead the quality assurance framework for station design, construction and commissioning.
• Oversee technical requirements on projects and authorize deviations from standard practices while strictly maintaining regulatory compliance.
• Enforce technical requirements for protection settings, fuse selection, and distribution system monitoring and control to ensure optimal reliability performance of the distribution system.
• Direct and conduct technical studies, power quality assessments, short-circuit calculations and root-cause investigations into equipment or protection system failures, translating findings into updated standards or mitigation strategies.
• Drive the creation and delivery of technical training materials to ensure field crews, commissioning staff, and designers remain proficient and up to date in structural standards, relay configurations, and standard work methods.
• Champion the Engineering Development Program within the team, actively guiding the mentorship, technical progression, and professional licensure of Engineer Interns to secure the engineering talent pipeline.
• Represent Hydro Ottawa on technical industry committees and working groups to influence evolving standards and keep the organization at the forefront of utility best practices.
• Act as the principal technical consultant for Planning, Design, and Operations, ensuring the team provides definitive guidance on complex structural, material, electrical, and protection coordination inquiries.
• Technically and administratively oversee internal Standards Committees, chairing sessions as required to advance engineering documentation.
• Actively participate in the company's Business Continuity Plan, On-Call programs, and the Electricity Emergency Response Program.
• Formulate and deliver comprehensive presentations and engineering reports to senior management, regulatory bodies, and diverse public and private stakeholders.
• Lead special engineering projects and perform other duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university (or equivalent)
• Professional Engineer licensed in the Province of Ontario
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience leading engineering teams, programs or projects
• Experience in an electric utility engineering environment considered an asset
• Knowledge of ISO 55000 Asset Management considered an asset
• Strong computer skills; proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools, preferably Google Workspace
• English essential, both oral and written; Bilingual (English/French) considered an asset

This is a management group opportunity and salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

This is a management group opportunity. The annual salary range for this position identified below depends on experience, education, and professional designation. The successful candidate will be offered a salary within this range based on their qualifications.
