Essential Job Summary:

The Supervisor of Fleet Maintenance leads day-to-day execution of shop activities to maximize fleet uptime, safety, and regulatory compliance. This role is responsible for work planning and scheduling, technician supervision, repair quality control, PM program execution, parts and cost discipline, and maintenance documentation integrity.

The Supervisor ensures all refuse collection vehicles are maintained in accordance with OEM standards, company maintenance policies, and FMCSA/DOT requirements. This position serves as the frontline leader responsible for delivering safe, reliable, and cost-effective fleet performance to Operations.

Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Enforce all safety policies, PPE requirements, and shop safety standards.
  • Lead daily safety engagement (toolbox talks, hazard identification, shop walkthroughs).
  • Ensure Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), hot work, lifting, and confined space practices are followed.
  • Investigate safety incidents and near misses; implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with FMCSA 49 CFR Part 396 maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure DVIR defects are properly documented, corrected, and closed in accordance with DOT standards.
  • Maintain accurate and audit-ready maintenance documentation.

Work Planning, Scheduling & Shop Execution

  • Plan, assign, and prioritize daily work orders (PMs, breakdowns, campaigns, road calls).
  • Manage work-in-process and ensure efficient shop utilization.
  • Balance preventive maintenance compliance with reactive repair demands.
  • Coordinate equipment downtime and return-to-service communication with Operations.
  • Manage emergency repairs, seasonal readiness, and severe weather response.
  • Oversee road call dispatch and vendor coordination when required.

Quality Control & Reliability

  • Verify repairs are completed correctly and meet OEM and company standards.
  • Conduct release-to-service inspections.
  • Reduce repeat repairs through root cause problem solving.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance inspections are thorough and standardized.
  • Drive continuous improvement in fleet reliability and uptime.

Technician Leadership & Workforce Development

  • Supervise, coach, and develop technicians to ensure high performance and accountability.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide timely coaching and discipline.
  • Manage attendance, productivity, and adherence to shop standards.
  • Support apprenticeship and skill development programs.
  • Promote a culture of ownership, teamwork, and professional conduct.
  • Maintain compliance with union agreements (if applicable).

Parts, Inventory & Cost Control

  • Maintain appropriate parts, tire, fluid, and consumable inventory levels.
  • Enforce inventory controls including cycle counts, core returns, and warranty recovery.
  • Approve parts purchases within authorization limits.
  • Monitor shop spend versus budget.
  • Identify cost savings opportunities without compromising safety or quality.

Systems, Reporting & Performance Metrics

  • Ensure accurate and timely work order documentation in the maintenance system.
  • Validate labor hours, coding accuracy, and repair notes.
  • Monitor and report on shop KPIs
  • Develop corrective action plans to address performance gaps.

  • 5+ years of heavy-duty fleet maintenance experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory or lead technician experience.
  • Strong knowledge of refuse truck systems
  • Working knowledge of FMCSA/DOT maintenance requirements.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems.
