Job Description
The Supervisor assumes responsibility to manage the shift to shift operations of the unit/department to provide high quality and safe patient care in a safe practice environment. The Supervisor aids to develop staff; collaborates with multidisciplinary professionals; and provides service excellence. This individual remains clinically competent in the area of practice and is able to take a direct patient care assignment as needed.
The Supervisor assists the Manager with but not limited to:
- Workforce planning;
- Establishing and implementing standards for practice and maintain authority, accountability and responsibility for staff in their area of responsibility;
- The ongoing support and cultivation of a culture of shared decision making;
- Budgeting and planning.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required. May have an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in lieu of specific education.
Experience:
- 5+ years of clinical experience preferred.
- Leadership experience preferred.

Receives minimal supervision from the manager of the unit. Performs all duties in an independent manner.

Supervises the activities of assigned employees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assists the Manager and leadership team with but not limited to the following:
Coordinates with the Laboratory Manager with respect to all functions of the laboratory.
- Maintains necessary technical skills and theoretical knowledge to troubleshoot laboratory procedures at all times. Coordinates the training of new personnel. Advises technical personnel of corrective actions necessary for procedural or instrumental problems when they occur.
- Possesses knowledge of instrument function and preventive maintenance procedures for all laboratory equipment.Reviews departmental maintenance records and assures performance of scheduled maintenance by department personnel and the documentation required by the various accrediting agencies. Makes provisions for proper instrument repair promptly.
- Maintains document control including review of technical procedure manuals and specimen collection, manuals for content and relevancy at least annually. Develops or write procedures for all areas of the laboratory when section heads or lead phlebotomist require assistance.
- Assists in the review of lab reports as needed for validity and accuracy and reports deficiencies to the laboratory Manager.
- Evaluates department performance and recommends measures to improve services and quality of current methodologies on a continuous basis.Establishes priorities, work routines and workflow patterns to assure prompt and efficient delivery of services
- Participates on the evaluation, testing and implementation of new procedures, techniques, methodologies and instrumentation as they occur.
- Supports Director and Manager in the facilitation of change through encouraging key stakeholder participation, communicating and reinforcing changes, and assisting in the evaluation of outcomes.
- Responsible for maintaining qualified lab personnel.
- Ensures all training and competency documentation is complete for direct reports.
- Complete performance evaluations for all direct reports.
- Reviews performance of staff for compliance with hospital and departmental policies.Routinely reviews and updates the laboratory policy manual to include changes or revisions as they occur.
- Participates in continuing education activities for laboratory personnel.Evaluates need for training or retraining staff as determined through competency testing.
- Ensures attendance of staff in all mandatory hospital in service programs when scheduled by laboratory employees.
- Ensures staff meet the minimum qualifications of their positions at all times including licensure, certification and registration, if applicable.
- Participates in interviewing candidates for employment.
- Works in coordination with Human Resources to administer corrective action to direct reports when required.
- Maintains the schedule, PTO selection and time keeping for all direct reports.
- Manage conflict; promote team dynamics, mentor and coach staff and peers, apply communication principles; encourage participation of staff; role model professional behavior; act as a change agent; and apply principles of self-awareness.

- Monitor patient safety and ensure reporting when necessary.
- Review event reports and complete follow up with employees and follow up documentation as necessary.
- Maintain survey regulatory readiness in coordination with Laboratory Accreditation Coordinator.
- Maintains laboratory safety program and annual review by staff.
- Maintains correct catalog of MSDS sheets and annually review and update laboratory inventory of chemicals in use.
b) Ensures safety checks are performed and documented.
- Maintains appropriate interdepartmental and intradepartmental relations.
- Attends, participates in, or conducts meetings as required.Participates on Medical Center committees as assigned.
- Conducts daily huddles with laboratory staff and maintain MDI boards.
- Investigates incidents, takes appropriate actions and prepares reports of such actions for problem resolution as they occur.
- Maintains liaison between laboratory and other Medical Center departments. Informs pathologists of unusual patient data and potential interdepartmental problems whenever they occur.
- Provides service or acts as laboratory representative regarding sample handling, patient preparation, use of the laboratory services, limitation of assays and other laboratory related topics when necessary.
Utilizes communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills to achieve clinical and financial outcomes.
Ensure productivity standards and effective efficient use of resources
Coordinate with section heads to maintain appropriate amount of laboratory supplies.
Coordinate capital purchases and annual budget with laboratory manager.
- Model personal and professional accountability: practice ethical behaviors; hold self and other accountable for respectful and professionalism; and promote and role model life-long learning.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Accepts additional assignments as required from laboratory manager.
May act as assistant lab manager in their absence and will assume duties of same to complete projects in a timely manner.
Required to participate in laboratory on-call rotation.
