Job Description

ISO New England is the independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.

Are you ready to lead the AI revolution in power systems? ISO New England's Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) department, the R&D engine driving innovation across the region’s power grid and the industry, is seeking an exceptional technical leader to establish and drive our Grid AI Innovation initiative. This is a unique opportunity to bridge cutting-edge artificial intelligence with mission-critical power system tasks, shaping the future of grid reliability and resilience.

As Supervisor of Grid AI Innovation, you'll lead a team at the intersection of power systems engineering and enterprise AI, developing and deploying production-grade generative AI and agentic AI solutions that directly impact New England's energy infrastructure. You'll work with stakeholders across Operations, Planning, and IT to identify high-value use cases, architect scalable AI solutions, and ensure responsible AI practices throughout the development life cycle. This role is perfect for someone who combines deep technical expertise in both power systems and modern AI technologies with proven leadership in driving innovation.

What we offer you:
• A stable, mission-driven workplace where your impact truly matters
• A highly engaged work environment that values inclusion, collaboration, and employee safety and wellbeing
• Competitive compensation with a base salary + performance bonus
• Robust benefits package, including:
◦ Enhanced 401(k) and financial planning support
◦ Tuition reimbursement and professional development
◦ Wellness programs, including an onsite gym
◦ Free coffee at our onsite café
◦ Flexible work hours
◦ Employee Business Networks
• Hybrid work environment - 3 days/week onsite
• Distance-based relocation assistance available

• Build and mentor a high-performing team of AI engineers and data scientists, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning.

Enterprise AI Solution Development
• Architect and deploy enterprise grade generative and agentic AI solutions, including modern orchestration frameworks, multi agent systems, RAG architectures, and MCP enabled integrations to automate complex grid operations and planning workflows.
• Lead the development of autonomous AI agents for decision support across real time operations, outage coordination, and system planning, leveraging advanced coordination patterns and distributed intelligence.
• Establish robust MLOps and CI/CD practices for scalable AI model deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.

AWS Cloud & Infrastructure
• Build scalable, secure AI solutions on AWS, leveraging Bedrock (Agents, Knowledge Bases, Guardrails, Flows), SageMaker, and other GenAI services while applying AWS Well Architected Framework principles and optimizing cloud performance and cost.
• Ensure enterprise grade security and compliance, collaborating with IT teams to maintain high availability, resilience, and adherence to ISO requirements for mission critical AI workloads.

Power System Domain Integration
• Integrate AI with core RTO/ISO power system domains, applying deep knowledge of market operations, transmission planning, reliability coordination, and regulatory requirements while combining AI solutions with existing tools such as PSS/E, PSCAD, DSATools, and EMS/SCADA.
• Develop and validate AI enhanced grid analytics, including renewable integration studies, EMT modeling, synchrophasor analysis, and probabilistic risk assessments, in close partnership with Operations and Planning teams.

What we are looking for
• PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with focus on power systems and artificial intelligence
• Minimum 5 years of experience in power system operations, planning, or engineering, with demonstrated understanding of RTO/ISO business processes and challenges
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience developing and deploying AI/ML solutions, with at least 2 years focused on generative AI and LLM applications
• Demonstrated technical leadership with more than five years of proven experience effectively leading and managing a highly technical team
