Job Description

Overall Objectives

Supervises, coordinates and monitors staff in daily operations and inspects facilities to ensure high quality of customer services and cleanliness. Oversees daily department operations in absence of manager, as assigned. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment. Able to effectively handle stressful situations, remaining calm and professional. Available to work or rotate shifts including weekends and holidays. Responsible for maintaining facilities in an attractive, sanitary condition.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Align department with strategy map and continually work to implement drivers in support of Independence Health System’s mission and vision.
  • Act promptly to resolve problems and initiate better ways of doing things by acting as a catalyst for change.
  • Establish and maintain a safe working environment and assure staff complies with safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines.
  • Equitably apply policies and procedures by issuing corrective action in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Assess customer’s needs, exceed customer expectations, and consider customers in decision making to improve customer satisfaction.
  • Act on most urgent tasks, leverage available resources, review own workload, implement workable systems, and provide clear direction.
  • This position has direct supervisory responsibilities and serves as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
  • Management responsibilities include hiring, coaching, skills development, recognition and rewards, staff productivity and performance management.
  • Operations Management - allocates and delegates work to make efficient use of all resources:
    • Establishes staffing patterns according to the department/units scope of service and budgetary guidelines.
    • Assists in developing schedules for all EVS personnel.
    • Interviews, recruits and retains qualified staff. Orients, trains and develops departmental personnel.
    • Establishes clear work objective and standards to prioritize and focus staff efforts.
    • Assists in establishing safety policies and procedures for the operation of equipment and service delivery practice in compliance with regulatory and organizational guidelines.
    • Collaborates with others in the delivery of services and use or resources.
  • Supervises, assigns, directs and assists staff.
    • Assigns staff to hospital facilities, grounds, satellites and all hospital related properties for routine cleaning and related activities.
    • Coordinates EVS activities in support of and around construction projects as required.
    • Ensures quality of work meets established specifications, complies with safety standards, hospital and all pertinent regulations.
  • Develops schedules for staff and building reviews.
    • Implements quarterly reviews of employee assignments and performance.
    • Develops maintenance schedules for all equipment as required.
    • Utilizes a tracking system for scheduling and reporting of work activity.
    • Monitors effectiveness of schedules; documents unplanned occurrences and corrective actions taken to appropriate management teams.
    • Audits reports and schedules for timely completion of scheduled work, addresses variances with manager.
  • Interprets and implements technical specifications pertaining to EVS maintenance.
    • Reads and interprets specifications and technical specifications to determine appropriate administration of equipment, operations and chemical usages.
    • Plans and directs routine maintenance activities based on technical specifications and manufacturer's recommendations.
    • Trouble shoots equipment and operational problems and implements solutions.
  • Routinely inspects buildings and equipment for proper operations.
    • Tests efficiency of systems utilizing appropriate methods.
    • Makes adjustments to optimize system performance and makes recommendations to management as necessary/
  • Participates with the Manager in the initial and ongoing training/education process.
  • Assists Manager with staff performance appraisals using employee evaluation system
    • Directs and reviews daily work performance of the Environmental staff, recommending to Manager when necessary disciplinary action. .
  • Assist staff in completion of assignments as necessary.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Participates and attends various hospital committees as requested by Manager or Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications/Experience

  • High School Diploma, GED or higher level of education with related experience and training, preferable within the past five (5) years and one (1) year of experience in housekeeping and floor care.
  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of functional area.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience with Environmental Services Supervisor responsibility within a healthcare setting.
  • Working knowledge of applicable regulations and standards OSHA, JACHO, DOH regulated waste.

License, Certification & Clearances

  • Act 33 Clearance
  • Act 34 Clearance
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Valid Driver’s License (if out of state hire, the record report from applicable state’s driver license department is required).

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).
  • Travel may be expected locally between System locations.
