
OPEN TO PERMANENT SUPERVISING SPECIAL OFFICER **
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Division of Environmental Health works to prevent and control illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks through outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement. With staff of 1,000, the Division covers a broad range of subject matter, including oversight of environmental investigations, lead poisoning, injury prevention, occupational health, food safety, childcare, radiation control, recreational and drinking water quality, air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health and pest control.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinates.
- Plan and coordinate assignments of staff and equipment.
- Patrol Health Department facilities and surrounding areas to maintain order.
- Respond to emergency situations; investigate, supervise and assist subordinates in the handling of serious and unusual incidents; determine if additional staff and/or presence of the police is required.
- Advise Department executives and staff on security matters.
- Conduct regular inspections to ensure that a safe environment is maintained.
- Keep peace and safeguard life and property against fire, vandalism, and thefts.
- Prepare, maintain and review records, log and report regarding patrols, demonstrations, arrests and other incidents relating to safety and security.
- Issue summonses to violators of penal law.
- Other related work as it pertains to the safety of patrons, visitors and property.

SUPERVISING SPECIAL OFFICER - 70817
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of fulltime satisfactory experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security.
Individuals serving in this title are designated as Peace Officers by the New York State Criminal Procedure Law. Therefore, all candidates must be qualified to serve as Peace Officers. Incumbents must satisfy the training requirements established by the State of New York for Peace Officers and obtain certification. Once obtained, this certification must be maintained for the duration of employment.
For Assignment To Assignment Level II:
A. One year of experience as a Supervising Special Officer-Assignment Level I; or
B. In addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I above, one year of experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security in a supervisory capacity.
For Assignment to Assignment Level III:
A. Two years of experience as a Supervising Special Officer; or
B. In addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I above, two additional years of full-time experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
