Purpose

The position of Superintendent, Health & Safety Mining is accountable for ensuring compliance to all health and safety legislation within Mining Business Unit in accordance with the FQM’s global health and safety standards and policies and ensuring Safe Production.

Key Responsibilities

  • This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legislative requirements pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.
  • Provide leadership to the H&S team in Mining by developing and maintaining strategic direction on H&S initiatives and programs.
  • Develop, implement and monitor effective systems to manage health and safety risks at workplace level including conducting risk assessments, monitoring of critical incidents and reporting of near misses.
  • Maintain effective communication with employees across all levels of the organisation on health and safety matters.
  • Implement Critical Control measures to mitigate fatal hazards and risks identified through risk assessment processes.
  • Ensure compliance with the Mineral Regulatory Commission (MRC) Management Systems.
  • Conduct audits and inspections as per approved schedule to ensure adherence to safe working practices and identification of areas for improvement.
  • Monitor trends and performance indicators to identify emerging issues and gaps in current systems and processes and take corrective action where necessary.
  • Liaise with various government departments and agencies not Limited to MRC such as the Ministry of Labour, Zambia Police Service, and other relevant authorities.
  • Coordinate occupational health surveillance programmes
  • Promote health and wellness initiatives aimed at reducing injuries and illnesses.

Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in mining or other engineering Fields.
  • Post graduate qualification in Health and Safety is a must.
  • Sound knowledge of mining regulations, and occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Sound Knowledge in Critical Risk Management
  • All qualifications must be certified by Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).

Experience

  • At least 8 years’ experience in managing health and safety functions at a senior management level preferably in an Open Pit Copper mining environment.
  • Experience in managing a large team of health and safety professionals.
  • Good understanding of stakeholder management principles and experience dealing with regulatory bodies.
