The Great Bear project is a development-stage asset located in the renowned and prolific Red Lake mining district, and represents one of the most exciting recent gold discoveries globally. The project has excellent potential to become a top-tier deposit that could support a large, long-life mine complex. Kinross’ comprehensive exploration and development program will aim to support the vision of a quality, high-grade, open-pit mine and a longer-term, sizeable underground mine.

Job Summary

The Superintendent, Open Pit will be responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution of all open pit mining activities, including drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling operations. This position provides leadership and direction to operational teams, ensuring production targets are achieved in alignment with short and long term mine plans, budget, and engineering standards. The Superintendent is accountable for the safety, performance, and development of the open pit team and for managing the area operating budget and resources to meet operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

• Oversee and direct open pit mining operations, ensuring safe, efficient execution of drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling activities to achieve production targets.
• Lead and coordinate short to medium term operational plans, ensuring alignment between engineering designs and field execution.
• Collaborate with Technical Services to review and implement mine plans and schedules and analyze and address deviations from plans.
• Ensure effective coordination between Mining, Maintenance, Processing, and Technical Services teams to meet site objectives.
• Oversee drill and blast and haulage activities to ensure plans are executed safely and in accordance with Kinross, Great Bear standards.
• Mange the pit operation to ensure production targets are achieved and within expected ore grade targets and use all available tools to drive continuous improvement.
• Develop medium to long term forecasting plans (people, equipment) to effectively execute operational targets.
• Assist with the preparation of annual budgets and business plans and manage operational costs
• Collaborate with Senior Leadership, Technical Services, Maintenance, and other support departments.
• Coordinate workforce planning, training, and succession development.
• Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to supervision and production crews, leading by example and visibly putting health and safety first to build a strong safety culture.
• Set performance targets and KPIs and monitor, measure, and manage the performance of the team and direct reports.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in mining engineering or a related technical discipline (or an equivalent combination of education and experience), with 10+ years of progressive open pit mining experience, including at least 3 years in a superintendent or senior supervisory role.

Experience in open pit operations and demonstrated leadership in a previous open pit start-up is preferred. A Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng. with Professional Engineers Ontario, or eligibility to register) is considered a strong asset.

• Strong understanding of mine planning, scheduling, and production processes.
• Experience with grade control, reconciliation, and operational reporting.
• Demonstrated leadership and team management experience.
• High attention to detail with excellent organizational skills.

Work Conditions

This position is based in Red Lake, Ontario. Local candidates, or those willing to relocate, with relocation assistance, will be given priority for this position. The schedule for this position is 5X2.

Compensation and Total Rewards

The base salary for the Superintendent, Open Pit is $175,000.00 to $210,000.00 + Short Term Incentive, + Long Term Incentive, + Group Benefit Coverage.

The actual offer will be determined through a comprehensive evaluation of each candidate's experience, capabilities, and potential impact, along with consideration of internal equity, team structure, and benchmark market data for similar positions.
