RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Continuously improve the safety culture of the site.
- Provide visible safety leadership and promote a positive, proactive safety culture throughout the operation.
- Lead by example in demonstrating commitment to "Zero Harm" principles.
- Coach, mentor, and develop OHS Officers, Safety Supervisors, and operational leaders.
- Drive workforce engagement and participation in safety initiatives.
- Ensure OHS objectives are integrated into operational business plans.
- Maintain and continuously improve the Occupational Health and Safety Management System in compliance with ISO 45001:2018 requirements.
- Ensure all elements of the OHSMS are effectively implemented and monitored.
- Coordinate internal and external ISO 45001 audits.
- Facilitate management reviews and ensure completion of corrective actions.
- Monitor OHSMS performance indicators and recommend improvement initiatives.
- Ensure proper control of OHS documentation and records.
- Lead site-wide hazard identification and risk assessment processes.
- Ensure operational risk registers are maintained and regularly reviewed.
- Implement and monitor critical risk management programs.
- Verify the effectiveness of critical controls associated with high-consequence risks.
- Promote risk-based thinking throughout all operational activities.
- Ensure risk assessments are completed before high-risk activities commence.
- Lead investigations of accidents, incidents, near misses, and high-potential events.
- Apply root cause analysis methodologies to identify contributing factors.
- Ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented and verified.
- Analyze incident trends and recommend appropriate interventions.
- Prepare and present incident investigation reports to leadership teams.
- Ensure compliance with applicable DRC mining, occupational health, and safety legislation.
- Maintain awareness of changes in legal and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct compliance audits and inspections.
- Liaise with regulatory authorities during inspections and investigations.
- Ensure statutory reporting obligations are fulfilled.
- Conduct routine workplace inspections, audits, and field safety interactions.
- Verify compliance with safe work procedures, standards, and permit systems.
- Monitor the effectiveness of safety-critical processes.
- Support departments in implementing corrective actions resulting from inspections and audits.
- Ensure contractors and business partners comply with company OHS requirements.
- Ensure emergency response plans are developed, maintained, and tested.
- Coordinate emergency drills and exercises.
- Evaluate emergency preparedness performance and implement improvements.
- Support emergency response teams during incidents and crisis situations.
- Support implementation of occupational hygiene monitoring programs.
- Ensure exposure risks are identified, assessed, and controlled.
- Monitor workplace health risks including Noise, Dust, Chemical exposure, Vibration, Heat stress and Ergonomic hazards
- Identify OHS training needs across the operation.
- Develop and deliver health and safety awareness programs.
- Ensure employees and contractors possess the necessary OHS competencies.
- Promote leadership safety development programs for supervisors and managers.
- Ensure contractor management systems comply with company standards.
- Conduct contractor safety evaluations and audits.
- Monitor contractor performance against agreed safety KPIs.
- Drive continuous improvement in contractor safety performance.
- Support employee wellness and health surveillance initiatives.
- Other duties as required
- Compliance with ISO 14001 and 45001 Standards.
QUALIFICATION & REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Mining Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering or a related discipline.
- Certifications: ISO 45001 Lead Auditor, ISO 45001 Lead Implementer, NEBOSH International Diploma or IGC, Incident Investigation Certification, Risk Management Certification or Emergency Response Management Training will be an added advantage.
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience: Minimum of 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in Occupational Health and Safety within mining, heavy industry, or large-scale industrial operations.
- Experience in underground and/or open-pit mining environments.
- Demonstrated experience managing ISO 45001-certified systems.
- Proven track record of delivering OHS performance improvements.
- Experience working in a large-scale mining operation or multinational industrial environment is highly desirable.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Efficiency with Microsoft word, outlook, PowerPoint and access.
- English fluency is an asset.
