About Northwest School Division

Northwest School Division serves 22 schools across northwest Saskatchewan, a region that spans about a three-hour drive from end to end. Our main office is in Meadow Lake, with satellite offices in Marshall and Turtleford. We are proudly rural, and we believe that is one of our greatest strengths: close communities, strong relationships, and room for leaders to make a real difference.

Our mission is Laying the Foundation for Success... One Student at a Time. Our vision is to create responsive, inclusive, and forward-thinking learning environments where every student is supported, challenged, and celebrated.

The Board of Education's Strategic Plan 2025-2028 sets three priorities that align with Saskatchewan's Provincial Education Plan:

  • Student Learning & Engagement
  • Mental Health & Well-Being
  • Retention & Recruitment

The Opportunity

Our classrooms are more complex than ever. Teachers are supporting a wider range of learning, behavioural, and mental health needs, and they need leaders who can help them respond with high-quality instruction. The Superintendent of Learning will be that leader for a group of principals and schools.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will work closely with the Director of Education to turn our strategic plan into better outcomes for students. You will coach and support principals, lead system-wide learning initiatives, and help us set, monitor, and report on meaningful local targets. You will do this in a culture built on clarity, ownership, and focus, and on a commitment to high expectations with high support.

Key Responsibilities

Advance the Strategic Plan

  • Lead the Student Learning & Engagement priority. This includes early intervention, building classroom capacity, student voice and leadership, electives, experiential and land-based learning, and career pathways such as dual credits, apprenticeship, and volunteerism.
  • Work with Student Services to support the Mental Health & Well-Being priority. Help schools build staff capacity to respond to student needs.
  • Support Retention & Recruitment by mentoring new teachers and developing principals and aspiring leaders. Help make Northwest a place where good people want to stay.
  • Use evidence such as student perceptual survey, attendance, credit attainment, reading screens, and student assessments to measure impact, not just activity.

Lead the Division Action Plan and Local Targets

  • Work with the Senior Administration team and school leaders to set, monitor, and report on division targets.
  • Lead supports and strategies in the provincial target areas: attendance, graduation rates, readiness for learning in the primary grades, and students' sense of safety and connection.
  • Advance the goals of Inspiring Success.
  • Help schools connect their own learning plans to division targets.

Provide Instructional Leadership for Growing Complexity

  • Build principals' capacity as instructional leaders through regular school visits, coaching, and feedback.
  • Promote effective assessment practices that guide and strengthen responsive, high-quality instruction.
  • Help schools identify learning and behavioural needs early and respond effectively in the classroom.
  • Support schools through difficult situations, including safe and orderly school environment matters, with sound judgement and care for everyone involved.
  • Lead professional learning that is practical, focused, and connected to division priorities.

Contribute to the Senior Leadership Team

  • Work across portfolios. Own the whole system, not just your own schools.
  • Help identify and manage risks that could affect students, staff, schools, resources, or community confidence.
  • Practice responsible stewardship of division resources.
  • Supervise and evaluate principals and other staff as assigned.

Who We're Looking For: A Leader Who Builds Trust

Trust is the foundation of our leadership team. In practice, this means you keep students at the centre, create clarity, develop others, address issues early, and balance accountability with compassion. You model the culture we want: integrity, professionalism, collaboration, curiosity, and responsible stewardship.

Qualifications

Required

  • Master's degree from a recognized university in a field related to the major duties of a Superintendent of Learning
  • Valid Saskatchewan Professional Teaching Certificate
  • At least two years of teaching experience in Canada, acceptable to the Division
  • A valid driver's license and willingness to travel regularly across the division
  • Be eligible for membership with LEADS

Assets

  • At least two years of administrative and/or system level experience
  • Knowledge of the Provincial Education Plan and Inspiring Success, and experience improving outcomes for First Nations and Metis students
  • Knowledge of secondary programming, graduation pathways, and credit attainment
  • Experience with early learning, literacy, or early intervention
  • A record of instructional leadership that improved teaching and learning
  • Proven ability to lead, influence, and support leaders through complex change
  • Skill in using data to set targets, monitor progress, and adjust strategy
  • Experience leading in rural or multi-community settings
