Job Description

The Superintendent directs and coordinates the operations on the terminal yard, including receiving, storing, and reloading cargo as well as packaging operations with the objective of guaranteeing quality, security, safety, and efficiency in accordance with relevant operational and technical parameters. This position serves as the first-line supervisor of the operations management team and is responsible for the direction and supervision of terminal and packaging operation workers.

  • Manages the availability of equipment and personnel required for timely completion of all terminal and packaging operations, ensures that staff and equipment are fully utilized, optimizes resource utilization and uptime to meet the economic performance indicators, and assists as necessary with other required tasks in order to complete the operation within the scheduled time frame.
  • Work closely with the General Superintendent and Operations Manager to prepare an operational plan while determining the appropriate workforce to hire for an efficient and cost-effective completion of the plan.
  • Supervises all personnel, including company labor and temporary labor, in proper operating procedures, and as needed, will counsel, discipline, and/or make termination recommendations to ensure an efficient operation.
  • Enforces productivity levels by effectively supervising workers within the operation and provides any follow-up assessments prior to shift end while ensuring all scopes of work are adhered to throughout the process.
  • Maintains clean and orderly workplaces at all times.
  • Inspects machinery and implements preventative maintenance measures and coordinates all necessary repairs with the equipment mechanic.
  • Completes various reports and forms such as shift production, time distribution (TD) sheets, and safety summaries as well as packaging supply inventories; Produces reports to respective parties within required deadlines.
  • Plans, holds and documents daily safety meetings; monitors and assists workers in adherence to safety procedures while implementing plans to address any safety hazards.
  • Ensures that all PPE is worn at all times and distributed for jobs that require additional PPE.
  • Enforces and follows plans, requirements, and orders.
  • Responsible for investigating and reporting damages and liabilities to the appropriate management and authorities.
  • Responsible for maintaining clear and open lines of communication with customers, vendors, and employees to ensure that the needs of each are addressed and handled professionally.
  • Ensures that all employees follow the company policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Manual.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification required.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and TWIC card.
  • Thorough knowledge of warehouse operations.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo securement rules are strongly desired.
  • Ability to manage a large, complex, and diverse workforce in a fast-paced environment.
  • Requires problem-solving skills to respond quickly and effectively to operational issues.
  • Requires the ability to plan and organize projects in a fast-paced environment and be available to work varied hours, shifts, and days.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively with the workforce, customers, third-party employees, and other staff.
  • Ability to explain, express, define, and give examples of ideas and operations.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Yes

Work environment:

  • Must be able to work in rotating shifts, days, evenings, and nights at multiple terminals
  • Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures of hot and cold, extremely dusty conditions, and occasionally, conditions of high levels of noise.
  • The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast-moving equipment.
  • The ability to drive 10%.
