Job Description

***SHIFT DETAILS*** Seasonal (mid-May to mid-August), up to 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday***

The Summer Programs Presenter leads and supports summer day camp programs, fostering a safe and positive learning environment for children ages 4-14. They develop and deliver interactive science-based curriculum, including hands-on activities and live demonstrations. This position collaborates with Community Programs and Education staff to plan, evaluate, and improve educational experiences, supports other public engagement programs and projects, and assists with preparations for the upcoming school year.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Participate in, prepare for, and lead summer day camp programs for children ages 4-14, managing up to 18 campers per week
  • Foster a safe and positive environment for campers, counselors, and administrative staff
  • Assist in the development of camp curriculum and supporting educational materials, including preparing supplies for each program
  • Communicate daily camp happenings, camper behavior, etc. to campers’ guardians and supervisors
  • Present science lesson plans, hands-on interactive activities, and live science demonstrations to a variety of audiences
  • Provide inspiring, engaging, and educational experiences for community members of all ages and backgrounds
  • Accurately gather, record, and submit required information for each program
  • Actively review the calendar of programs several weeks in advance in coordination with other staff members
  • Collaborate with Community Programs and Education staff to develop, evaluate, and refine learning experiences
  • Attends meetings and training sessions
  • Other duties as assigned. Examples include co-facilitating activities at offsite community events and in-building community programs and assisting with school year preparations

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be available to work for the duration of the summer (mid-May to mid-August)
  • Must pass a Utah Criminal Record background check
  • Experience teaching or facilitating in formal or informal learning environments is preferred
  • Basic computer operations, including Microsoft Office
  • Highly dependable, punctual, and accountable
  • Engaging and enthusiastic personality
  • Ability to describe and convey science principles and concepts to a wide range of ages and backgrounds
  • Able to work independently and adapt to dynamic situations
  • Must successfully complete online Salt Lake County trainings

Able to perform physical duties including:

  • Must be able to lift 50
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Must be comfortable using educational and scientific equipment including but not limited to: liquid nitrogen, flammable gases, compressed air, etc.
  • Must be able to occasionally work outside in all weather conditions

BACKGROUND CHECK INFORMATION:

Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

TEMPORARY POSITIONS:

An "At Will", FLSA non-exempt employee who is not eligible for County benefits and who must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month.
