SCOPE OF POSITION: To assist Community Center Manager with administrative, leadership and program needs of the summer camp program.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma/ GED minimum requirement
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have valid Driver’s License
  • At least two seasons camp experience or youth work equivalent
  • Prior leadership experience preferred

PROGRAM DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of Community Center Manager:

  • Assist with designing, planning and implementation of the summer camp program.
  • Assist with the supervision of summer camp staff, including corrective and disciplinary processes.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of summer camp staff orientation, including volunteers and guest staff.
  • Assist with the camper discipline in consultation with the lead counselors and Community Center Manager or Corps Officers.
  • Assist with the programming of daily chapels, crafts, enrichment activities and recreational activities.
  • Assist with creating a weekly staff schedule for summer staff.
  • Assist with staff cleaning schedules and room set up/break down each day
  • Coordinate end of summer events for staff, campers and families
  • Assist in serving as a contact for Human Resource matters.
  • Ensure the implementation of Salvation Army policy in regard to hiring, termination, workers’ compensation matters, time sheets and the Employee Handbook.
  • Will serve as point of contact to pertinent officials in regard to reporting child abuse. May be asked to assist in making phone calls and/or reports to DHS, DHQ and THQ.
  • Assist the Community Center Manager as a contact person for parents, staff, and emergency services as directed
  • Assist Community Center Manager in taking payments as needed from parents. Work with Corps Assistant on any payment issues
  • Participate in all summer camp programs as required (e.g. chapel, staff meetings, enrichment activities, recreational activities, etc).
  • Work alongside and in agreement with the Community Center Manager and Corps Officers
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Community Center Manager and Corps Officers
  • May be requested to drive or accompany hospital transport of camper or staff.
  • Assist in driving campers to trips throughout the week utilizing the Salvation Army shuttle
  • Ensure proper opening and closing procedures are followed (i.e. camper areas clean and picked up, lights in facility off, alarm ready, etc.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Needs an understanding of Salvation Army policy in regard to hiring, termination, workers’ compensation matters, time sheets and the Employee Handbook.
  • Needs an understanding of contacting pertinent officials in regard to reporting child abuse.
  • Ability to supervise and provide guidance to staff and campers
  • Ability to help organize and process financial documents as related to Summer Day Camp fees
  • Ability to create unique, fun and safe games and activities for campers
  • Responsible individual with a desire to work with youth
  • Must possess leadership skills, with the ability to plan, originate, organize and execute special programs

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike and twist on a continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

There may be phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.

  • May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, gym, activity rooms, etc.

MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
