Requisition Summary

This materials laboratory internship will support vehicle and powertrain products under the direction of materials engineers in areas of research and development, material validation, and failure analysis. Under guidance from materials engineers the intern will be responsible for conducting tests and analysis on a wide variety of material types from plastics, composites, metals, and coatings using analytical and physical property instrumentation.

Division Information


The PACCAR Technical Center provides engineering excellence to the truck, engine, and winch divisions of PACCAR Inc through innovative product development and testing. We are located in beautiful Mt. Vernon, WA.


Job Functions / Responsibilities

  • Completion of materials property tests ranging from hardness, tensile strength, and chemical analysis to evaluating effects of operating environment and material fatigue life.
  • Develop test fixtures, comply with industry standards, and document test results
  • Perform metallurgical sample preparation and participate in failure analysis

Qualifications:

Education

The successful candidate must be in a Junior or Senior standing working towards a bachelor of science in engineering, materials science, or chemistry

The following abilities or tolerances are required:

  • Ability to summarize technical issues and communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Lift and carry at least 50 pounds
  • Push and pull at least 125 pounds
  • Repetitive bending, stooping and kneeling
  • Frequent work at or above shoulder level
  • Good manual dexterity
  • Ability to use vibratory tools
  • Ability to work with or around solvents, degreasing agents, greases, oils paints and solder with proper safety equipment
  • Work in areas of high temperature and humidity
  • Work with vehicle fluids
  • Work in areas of high noise with hearing protection
  • Tolerate eye, hearing, and foot protection
  • Good vision/depth perception with or without corrective lenses
  • Work around electronic equipment

Desired Skills

  • Experience and desire for hands on work in sample preparation and testing
  • Ability to learn new techniques quickly
  • Understanding of basic statistics and experience with Design of Experiments
  • Strong technical writing skills

Intern Benefits

Salary: Undergraduate Students: $25.00/hour, Graduate Students: $30.00/hour
