Job Description

The Lifeguards are responsible for maintaining a safe and fun waterfront experience for all campers and staff. They will provide rules, expectations, and safety guidelines to campers and staff and are responsible for the upkeep of equipment and supplies, communicating issues to their supervisor promptly. They will also be adopted to a specific village and will assume cabin counselor duties during evening and meal times. Lifeguards are an essential part of check-in and check-out, assisting with luggage, vehicles and greeting families. The successful candidate truly enjoys working with children of various Frost Valley programs.

Requirements

  • Prevent issues at the waterfront by holding campers and staff accountable to the rules, reporting any broken or unsafe equipment and unsafe conditions
  • Provide constant scanning of water when guarding
  • Motivate and encourage campers and counselors to be active participants in the waterfront
  • Teach safe behaviors and follow best practice within their area of specialty
  • Maintain and care for any equipment used
  • To set up and breakdown the waterfront daily
  • Maintain physical abilities of job by completing endurance training
  • Assume special assignments and responsibilities during check in/out, all camp events or on rainy days as determined by the Activity Director
  • To be a part of adopted village/cabin during all non-instruction time reporting to Village Coordinator/Cabin Counselors
  • Receive supervision and guidance from Head Guards and Waterfront Director ensuring to meet regularly and being active in seeking any additional support
  • Assist in the overall running of camp by suggesting ideas, providing leadership when required and completing all duties as assigned.
  • Maintain a friendly, cooperative, and professional relationship with your co-workers, Director and any other staff.
  • Be a good role model for fellow staff and campers at all times. This includes modeling acceptable behavior, language, Frost Valley’s core values and outdoor standards.
  • Ensure that Frost Valley Summer Camps achieves the highest standard and meets the mission and goals of both the Summer Camp Department and Frost Valley YMCA, as well as expectations of customers.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Offer help and assist with any other duties as assigned for the success of Frost Valley.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 17 years of age
  • Experience working with youth and teens, or a strong desire to do so
  • Ability to work long hours, including evening and late night programs
  • Ability to be flexible to sudden changes in schedule, staff and campers
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with campers and staff
  • Present a strong, positive model for kids and fellow staff members
  • Possess excellent communication skills and group facilitation skills
  • Be a strong leader and work well with a team of others
  • Be able to multi-task and handle pressure well
  • Current qualification as American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard, or equivalent preferred - able to be provided onsite
  • Willing to work in a variety of aquatic programs, including boating, swimming, recreational programming, and instructional swim

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • The employee frequently is required to walk throughout camp, sit for long periods and swim.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
