About the Role

The role of Summer Camp Counselor consists primarily in running high quality camp sessions for the Summer Camps at your home gym. Summer Camp Counselors are also expected to provide curriculum for their camp, either through collaboration with other coaching staff or on their own, to best serve the needs of their camp climbers.

Summer Camp Counselors are seasonal workers, and are anticipated to work during Summer months only. You will be working in the Summer Camp Counselor capacity unless offered a Coaching position by the Youth Program Director at the conclusion of the Summer Camp program.

Job Skills and Qualifications

  • Experienced in bouldering, top rope, and lead climbing.
  • Sound understanding of climbing techniques such as footwork, body positioning, movement efficiency, route reading, etc.
  • Sound understanding of off the wall exercises/training such as push ups, pull ups, lifts with regard to proper form and safety
  • Patience and passion for working with kids at a variety of ability levels and learning styles.
  • Ability to bring a creative, fun approach to climbing instruction and curriculum; makes learning how to climb enjoyable and engaging.
  • Ability to create high quality training curriculum and programming for the Climbing Club Team.
  • Able to collaborate with other coaches to facilitate an exceptional club experience for our climbers.
  • Passion for working with children and facilitating their growth as climbers and people
  • Safety-conscious approach to work.
  • Empathetic, age-appropriate approach to teaching and communication with children.

Responsibilities

  • Show up on time and ready to work. Be consistently available to attend all club practices and most competitions (if applicable, not all coaches go to competitions).
  • Assist in creating and implementing training curriculum for Summer Camp Sessions.
  • Oversee safety of club climbers during training and manage impact of the club training on gym members.
  • Create (or contribute to) training materials for club (goals sheets, training logs, etc.)
  • Consistent with communication with club parents about club scheduling (competitions, practices, club events, etc.) and individuals (behavioral issues, performance updates, etc.)
  • Consistent communication with Youth Programs Director and Lead Team Coach (if applicable) at your location about program quality and development.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to stand for the duration of an entire practice.
  • Able to belay for extended periods of practice as needed.
  • Ability to effectively and appropriately spot climbers during bouldering activities.
  • Ability to appropriately demonstrate proper exercise and lifting form
  • Bending at the waist and neck, sitting, kneeling, laying horizontally, use of arms, wrists and all bodily movements in climbing.

Pay Scale and Benefits

Starting pay rate is $19.00/hour. Summer Camp Counselors' individual compensation decisions are associated with one or more of the following: size of the climbing facility, bouldering only facilities, facilities with lower membership volume, experience coaching, number of participants in each program, and/or tenure.
