Job Description

The Summer Camp Counselor oversees campers in their assigned unit and provide programming for campers. Due to close contact and overnight supervision of a Girl Scout minor girl population in this residential setting, Camp Counselors must be female.

Camp Counselors will specialize in one of the following: Lifeguard, Adventure, Boating, Trips, or other approved activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist Summer Camp Activity Leaders and Summer Camp Program Supervisor in planning and implementing programming within the unit and scheduled activity sessions.
  • Maintain a stocked first aid kit for the unit, report accidents and any changes in campers’ health status promptly.
  • Wake campers on time and communicate proper attire for the day.
  • Teach camping skills and appreciation of the outdoors to campers.
  • Support daily housekeeping and sanitation efforts while ensuring all supplies and equipment are properly cared for and used safely.
  • Assist in the execution of the GSHPA crisis management plan for emergencies that may occur during camp at any time, day or night.
  • Abide by GSHPA code of conduct, rules, and expectations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  • Minimum age of 20.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate girls to participate in activities and lead activities in a flexible, professional manner.
  • Prior experience in one or more of the following activity areas is preferred:
    • Lifeguard: Current Lifeguard certification (or approved equivalent) or ability to pass during pre-camp training.
    • Adventure: Ability to pass pre-camp Adventure Course Training.
    • Boating: Pre-camp training with Aquatics/Boating Activity Leader.
    • Trips: Plan and lead off-site trips for campers.
    • Other Approved Activities: Provide additional activities based on personal specialties not included above (example: crafts, STEM, dramatic arts, outdoor skills, music, etc.).
  • Attend and complete pre-camp trainings.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Ability to quickly respond to emergencies 24/7 when on camp property and follow GSHPA established emergency procedures.
  • Ability to live and work in the outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk a mile over uneven terrain.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards.
  • Ability to adapt well to changing circumstances, direction, and strategy.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations in a group setting.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to pass required background checks.
  • Must present a current form of ID affirming female gender at time of hire.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
