
Millimeter wavelength observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are one of our best sources for understanding the fundamental nature and contents of the universe. The atmosphere has long been known to be the largest noise source for millimeter wavelength telescopes, but as CMB instruments have advanced we have begun to find evidence of clouds producing linearly polarized artifacts which must be flagged and cleaned from the data. We have developed an all-sky camera system now deployed to the Simons Observatory (SO) site in Chile that has taken a year of sky images co-located with the SO telescopes. This project will extend and train a UNet model previously developed to automatically detect clouds in the telescope observing regions to simultaneously reject reflection artifacts. The full model will then be used to implement inference in real-time sky images and provide instant feedback to remote observers.
Education and Experience Requirements
The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States.
Applicants must be:
Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution.
Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or
Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution.
Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident at the time of application.
