Job Description

POSITION: Substitute Teacher

LOCATION: Assigned School(s)

CLASSIFICATION: Substitute Professional

REPORTS TO: Head Principal and/or Assistant Principal

EVALUATION: Performance and effectiveness may be reviewed by the principal or designee in accordance with county procedures and applicable West Virginia law and policy.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

SALARY: In accordance with the Pocahontas County Schools substitute salary schedule. See pocahontascountyschoolswv.sites.thrillshare.com for current rates and benefits information, if applicable.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: As needed during the school year in accordance with West Virginia Code and county staffing needs.

Pursuant to WV Code §18A-1-1, a substitute teacher serves in place of the regularly assigned teacher and is responsible for maintaining continuity of instruction and supervision during the teacher's absence. The substitute teacher provides a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment while implementing lesson plans, instructional activities, and classroom procedures established by the regular teacher.

The substitute teacher performs duties consistent with the expectations of a professional educator as defined by West Virginia Code, West Virginia Board of Education policy, and Pocahontas County Board of Education policy. The substitute teacher may be assigned to any grade level or content area consistent with the employee's certification, authorization, and district needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma, bachelor's degree, or other qualifications as required for the applicable West Virginia substitute permit, authorization, or teaching certificate.
  • Valid West Virginia Substitute Teaching Permit, Short-Term Substitute Permit, Long-Term Substitute Permit, Professional Teaching Certificate, or other credential appropriate for the assignment.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-10.

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants who have recent unsatisfactory evaluations will not be considered eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants who demonstrate unsatisfactory interview performance are not eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants who receive unfavorable reference recommendations will not be eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants who have been dismissed or who have had their contracts non-renewed for cause by another school district are not eligible for consideration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning and Preparation

  • Demonstrating Knowledge: Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively carry out instructional plans, classroom routines, and assigned responsibilities.
  • Implementing Instructional Plans: Follows lesson plans, schedules, and instructional activities provided by the regular teacher to maintain continuity of instruction.
  • Understanding Students: Demonstrates awareness of student needs and follows accommodations, modifications, behavior plans, health plans, and other documented supports as provided.
  • Maintaining Records: Completes attendance, required documentation, and reports as directed by the school or regular teacher.

Classroom Environment

  • Creating a Respectful Culture: Establishes and maintains a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment conducive to student success.
  • Managing Student Behavior: Maintains classroom expectations and implements established classroom management procedures to promote appropriate student behavior.
  • Organizing the Learning Environment: Maintains an orderly classroom environment and ensures instructional materials and resources are used appropriately.
  • Ensuring Safety: Implements and enforces school safety procedures and responds appropriately to emergencies and safety concerns.

Instruction

  • Engaging Students in Learning: Provides instruction and learning activities as directed by the regular teacher and encourages student participation and engagement.
  • Communicating Clearly: Provides clear directions, explanations, and expectations to students.
  • Monitoring Student Progress: Observes student performance and behavior and communicates relevant information to the regular teacher and administration.
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: Adapts to varying grade levels, instructional settings, student needs, schedules, and assignments.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Reflecting on Practice: Reviews completed instructional activities and communicates pertinent information regarding the instructional day.
  • Collaborating with Colleagues: Works cooperatively with administrators, teachers, counselors, interventionists, special education personnel, and other staff to support student success.
  • Communicating Professionally: Maintains appropriate and professional communication with staff, students, parents, and community members.
  • Participating in the School Community: Supports school operations and follows building procedures, expectations, and assigned responsibilities.
  • Demonstrating Professionalism: Adheres to West Virginia Code, WVBE policies, county policies, ethical standards, and professional expectations. Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates reliability, punctuality, and sound professional judgment.
  • Engaging in Professional Learning: Completes required training and professional development activities as directed.
  • Supporting Student Success: Implements accommodations, interventions, IEP requirements, Section 504 plans, health plans, and other student supports as directed and appropriate to the assignment.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervising Students: Provides appropriate supervision of students during instructional and non-instructional periods, transitions, meals, field experiences, and other assigned settings to promote student safety and well-being.
  • Following School Procedures: Complies with all school, district, state, and federal requirements, including attendance reporting, confidentiality requirements, and emergency procedures.
  • Performing Assigned Responsibilities: Carries out other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, or designee in support of the educational mission of Pocahontas County Schools.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
