POSITION: Substitute School Nurse

REPORTS TO: Campus Director/Assistant Director or Designee

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Substitute / As Needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Ohio Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Previous nursing experience required; school nursing, pediatric, emergency, or similar experience preferred.
  • Ability to respond appropriately and calmly to medical situations and emergencies.
  • Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, staff, and administrators.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks and district employment requirements.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Substitute School Nurse provides temporary nursing coverage as needed to support the health, safety, and well-being of students and staff. This position performs routine school nursing duties, responds to illnesses and injuries, administers medications and treatments as authorized, and follows established district health and safety procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide basic nursing care to students and staff for illnesses, injuries, and other health-related needs.
  • Assess students who become ill or injured during the school day and determine appropriate next steps within the scope of nursing practice and district procedures.
  • Administer medications and prescribed treatments in accordance with physician orders, parent/guardian authorization, and district procedures.
  • Provide emergency care, first aid, and CPR when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of health office visits, medications, treatments, injuries, and other nursing services provided.
  • Follow individual student health plans, emergency action plans, and other established medical protocols.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians, administrators, staff, and emergency personnel as appropriate regarding student health concerns.
  • Assist students with chronic or acute health conditions during the school day.
  • Follow all applicable confidentiality requirements, including FERPA and HIPAA requirements as applicable.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe health office environment.
  • Follow district policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal requirements.
  • Perform other health-related duties as assigned.
