TITLE OF VACANCY: SubstituteGeneral Maintenance/Campus Security

POSITION TYPE: Service

ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: TheWest Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia

Performs campus security rounds as scheduled and maintenance tasks in all buildings and areas of campus to assure the safety, welfare, and integrity of the students and staff of WV Schools for the Deaf and the Blind and the public.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 – "Employee Code of Conduct" and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.

  • Observes safety precautions in carrying out assigned duties.
  • Carries and operates communication devices with established notification procedures, as requested.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Patrols entire campus to maintain safety and welfare of students, staff, and public.
  • Maintains grounds in a safe and attractive manner. Assists with snow and ice removal operations when requested.
  • Make checks of equipment, grounds, and property to check for danger from fire, theft or other hazards.
  • Learn to operate fire alarm systems, report fires and other emergencies clearly and accurately as directed and use basic firefighting equipment until the fire department arrives.
  • Greets and routes visitors in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Follows applicable procedures in dealing with intruders.
  • Operates guard tour verification system to verify that rounds are made punctually.
  • Assists with students who may become ill or in emergency situations as requested.
  • Takes names and license plate numbers of all people encountered during routine rounds and provides list as well as unusual details of encounters to the Director of Operations.
  • Wear a security vest and/or uniform for identification purposes including security belt with all appropriate equipment properly located.
  • Notifies local law enforcement agencies should assistance be needed.
  • Reviews and understands how to use the WVSDB Crisis Response Ready-Reference Guide.
  • Maintains patrol vehicles. Checks oil, belts, tires, interior, etc. once per shift. Reports on any deficiencies to the Director of Operations.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks, when assigned.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be 21 years of age and;

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5.

  • Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b. demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required.

  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate.

    Experience and/or training in any/or all job classifications identified within this job description preferred.

  • Possess a valid state issued motor vehicle operator's license to operate WVSDB security vehicles.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computer and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions. The employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50-100 pounds. He/she shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.

  8. The staff member understands that work assignments may change or be added as priorities emerge.

SALARY:

Hourly rate of pay based on WVSDB Service Personnel Salary Schedule, C Scale. Dependent on applicable years of experience and education level.

EVALUATION

Performance evaluation in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5314.
