Job Description

POSITION: Substitute Custodian

LOCATION: Assigned School(s) and Facilities

CLASSIFICATION: Service Personnel

REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Director of Maintenance

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WVBE Policy 5314, and Pocahontas County Schools Policy 4220.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

SALARY: In accordance with the substitute service personnel pay schedule established by the Pocahontas County Board of Education.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: On an as-needed basis during the school year and summer months, as assigned.

Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8:

A Custodian means a person employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse and may assist with the operation of heating and cooling systems and the performance of minor maintenance duties.

The Substitute Custodian is responsible for providing temporary custodial services during the absence of a regularly assigned custodian. The employee assists in maintaining school buildings, facilities, and grounds in a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly condition that supports student learning and school operations.

Assignments may vary by location and may include day shift, evening shift, summer cleaning, special events, or other custodial coverage as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate as required by WV Code §18A-2-5.
  • Must be currently employed in the classification or successfully pass the state-prescribed examination for the position in accordance with WV Code §18A-4-8e.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-10 and applicable state requirements.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Building and Facility Care

  • Perform routine cleaning of classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, gymnasiums, locker rooms, and other assigned areas.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, scrub, wax, buff, and maintain floors and surfaces.
  • Clean, sanitize, and restock restroom facilities.
  • Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash and recyclable materials.
  • Maintain assigned areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition

Maintenance and Facility Support

  • Perform minor maintenance and repair duties as assigned.
  • Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, and facility needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance activities and facility inspections.
  • Support facility preparation and cleanup for meetings, events, athletic activities, and community functions.

Grounds and Safety

  • Assist with maintaining school grounds, sidewalks, entrances, and outdoor areas.
  • Assist with snow removal, groundskeeping, and litter control as assigned.
  • Follow established safety procedures regarding chemicals, equipment, tools, and custodial practices.
  • Assist in securing facilities and reporting safety or security concerns.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, flexibility, and professionalism.
  • Work cooperatively with administrators, teachers, students, service personnel, and community members.
  • Participate in required training and safety programs.
  • Adhere to all federal laws, state laws, WVBE policies, county policies, and workplace regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Maintenance, Superintendent, or designee.

  • Adapt to changing work locations, assignments, and schedules

Physical Movements
The employee is frequently required to:

  • Push and pull floor buffers, floor scrubbers, vacuums, garbage containers, carts, lawn equipment, and snow removal equipment.
  • Bend, stoop, squat, and kneel while cleaning, maintaining facilities, performing groundskeeping duties, and handling materials.
  • Reach overhead while cleaning windows, vents, shelving, cabinets, lighting fixtures, and other elevated surfaces.
  • Climb ladders and stairs when performing cleaning, maintenance, and inspection duties.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, custodial equipment, groundskeeping equipment, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.

Vision, Hearing, and Communication Requirements

  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to hear and respond to alarms, warning signals, equipment sounds, and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, administrators, and emergency personnel when necessary.

Work is performed in classrooms, offices, cafeterias, restrooms, gymnasiums, athletic facilities, mechanical rooms, storage areas, grounds, parking lots, and other district facilities. Duties may be performed in confined spaces, elevated locations, and outdoor environments.

The employee may be exposed to:

  • Cleaning agents, disinfectants, and other custodial chemicals.
  • Dust, dirt, pollen, mold, and other airborne particles.
  • Moving mechanical equipment and powered machinery.
  • Wet floors and slippery surfaces.
  • Extreme temperatures encountered during outdoor work, snow removal, grounds maintenance, or work in mechanical and boiler rooms.
  • Moderate to high noise levels generated by equipment, machinery, building systems, and school activities.
