Substitute Crossing Guards

Contract, On-Call Position

Non-Union

The Township of Springwater, located in Simcoe County, Ontario, is seeking highly motivated and experienced individuals to fill an existing role of Substitute Crossing Guard for backup coverage. Substitute Crossing Guards will be on-call and be required report to one of the following locations on short-notice:

  • Penetanguishene Rd/Albert Street, Hillsdale;
  • Yonge St S/Houdon St, Elmvale;
  • Queen St E/Simcoe St, Elmvale; and
  • Doran Rd/Belmont Cres, Midhurst.

Crossing Guards are responsible to safely escort pedestrians, during school crossing hours, as defined in the Highway Traffic Act across roadways at designated school crossings by monitoring traffic flow gaps and assuming right-of-way, while adhering to regulations, policies and procedures.

Position Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely direct or escort pedestrians, as defined in the Highway Traffic Act, across roadways at designated school crossings by monitoring traffic flow gaps and assuming right of way.
  • Be punctual, arrive on time and remain at school crossing location for the scheduled hours.
  • Deal with all contacts in a courteous, friendly and efficient manner.
  • Responding to pedestrian inquiries and providing information, as required
  • Spreading salt/sand mixture around sidewalk and cross walk area during winter months to melt ice and improve traction
  • Observe and report any safety-related incidents or hazardous conditions.
  • Recognize road hazards and exercise good judgement when interrupting the flow of Traffic.
  • Adhere to emergency vehicle right of way, ensuring they have priority over both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Wear mandatory safety equipment and clothing supplied by the Township of Springwater at all times while on duty.
  • Attend advanced health and safety training
  • Work in compliance with the Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, applicable legislation, regulations, statutes, and departmental policies/procedures/practices and operational guidelines.
  • Ensure that all necessary personal protective equipment (e.g. safety boots, reflective vest, gloves, hearing protection, eye protection, stop sign etc.) are used and are maintained in good condition.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Excellent judgment, initiative, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with children, parents, pedestrians, school officials and the police.
  • Ability to walk quickly and repeatedly in and out of the intersection and stand for 60 minutes, three times a day.
  • Physical ability to perform crossing activities.
  • Ability to effectively hear and see on-coming traffic at a safe distance (approximately 300 feet).
  • Ability to read, interpret and follow procedural and policy manuals related to job performed.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work outside during all weather conditions.
  • Ability to read, interpret and follow procedural and policy manuals related to job performed.
  • The successful candidate must be 18 years of age or older.
  • The successful candidate will be required to obtain an acceptable Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check at their expense, prior to the employment commencement date.
  • Standard First Aid level C, CPR and AED training is an asset.
  • Crossing Guards must be available to work on short notice and willing to work a flexible schedule.

Rate of Pay

Compensation for this position is $25.59 per hour (2026 rate), plus statutory holidays and vacation pay as per the Employment Standards Act. Substitute Crossing Guards may also be eligible for standby pay of $10.00 per day.

Hours of Work

This position will be on standby and may be called to work up to 10 hours per week with shifts scheduled at two (2) different times a day Monday to Friday, during the school calendar year. Shifts are dependent upon the school schedule. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary for on-call work, shift changes, location change, and/or work extra hours as required.
