Definitions Used Throughout the Job Description

Direct Supervision: A Substation Maintenance Technician – Journey Level Technician observing an employee closely enough at working level to provide immediate feedback in case the employee is about to perform an unsafe act. The purpose of this close supervision is to ensure that proper safety rules, operating procedures, and electrical safety-related work practices are being followed.

General Supervision: A Substation Maintenance Technician – Journey Level Technician observing an employee from the immediate area of the structure, providing the necessary instruction and direction for the task being performed.

General Purpose of Work

A Substation Maintenance Technician Apprentice – 1st Step may perform the duties listed under “General Duties” adhering to supervision guidelines as outlined.

General Duties

The Apprentice may perform the following duties:

Under Direct Supervision:

  • Assists in the installation, operation, construction, and maintenance of all types of transformers, circuit breakers, reclosers, switches, capacitors, reactors, arrestors, fuses, load tap changers, bushings, bus work, conductors, control cables, connectors, and all substation equipment.
  • Constructs, installs, operates, and maintains structures, buildings, supports, fences, and substation facilities as required.

Under General Supervision:

  • Takes oil samples from power transformers, load tap changers, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, and other oil-containing equipment as required.

Upon General Crew Leader and Supervisor Approval, the Apprentice May Perform (Without Supervision):

  • Maintains necessary tools used for the above work.
  • Performs housekeeping of shop and storage areas.
  • Performs driver maintenance on and operates Company vehicles.
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as assigned, including but not limited to delivery/pickup of parts, materials, or equipment to/from substations.

Under the Direction of a Supervisor and with Direct Supervision and Approval of Journey Level Technician Supervising:

  • Performs switching activities and maintenance in proximity to energized equipment such as racking breakers, opening disconnects, and installing/removing grounds with visual opens.

Qualifications

  • Must have graduated from an accredited Electric Power Distribution program and demonstrate suitable proficiency in that classification as required, or have suitable prior experience in high-voltage electrical power systems (greater than 600 volts).
  • In the first six months, must obtain a Wisconsin CDL, Class A, and maintain it.
  • Must be reasonably available for overtime and emergency work.

Knowledge and Skills to be Acquired

  • Acquires and demonstrates knowledge of the name, purpose, and storage places of substation stock materials and tools used for construction and maintenance.
  • Learns and practices all safety rules that apply to this work and any protective equipment used in this type of work.
  • Identifies substation equipment (transformer, circuit breaker, etc.).
  • Properly conducts oil sampling.
  • All work on energized secondary circuits in substations and outside of the training yard shall be done under the supervision of a Substation Maintenance Technician – Journey Level Technician.
  • Must satisfactorily complete all State requirements for Substation Maintenance Technician Apprentice – 1st Step, including classroom instruction, testing, and on-the-job training (e.g., MGE Substation Maintenance Technician Apprentice Handbook).

This position is subject to drug testing according to Federal Department of Transportation regulations.
